Chicago PD's Sophia Bush Opens Up About Her New Role, Intense Training, and Being Princess Leia

Have you ever wondered how much training goes into making those fast-paced, high action cop shows you see on television? The answer: a lot! Sophia Bush can fully attest to the amount of training she endured to fully capture the abilities of her character Detective Erin Lindsay on the new hit NBC Show Chicago PD.

"We trained a lot," Bush told me. "We worked with intelligence officers in Chicago. We trained with the swat team and I spent a lot of time with female undercover officers to hear about the job from their perspective as well. We trained in pretty much every arena, high-speed chases and precision driving, weapons training and tactical training and then a lot of that also comes into play when we're clearing buildings, learning to breech doors. There's a lot to it."

NBC described her character as a "tough, no-nonsense detective". Of course, it's not easy. Bush, 31, explained to me what her biggest challenge was when preparing for her role of Detective Lindsay.

"For me, I think it's been learning to let go of the pressure that I put on myself to do everything just so because we all spent so much time as I mentioned with all of these officers and we want to do right by them. We know the stories of their partners who've been killed in the line of duty. We know the stories of the kids that they couldn't save but tried and the crime scenes that they've shown up at that still haunt them at night. Knowing how much they sacrifice, we want to make them proud. We want to do our job on a level that makes them nod at the TV screens when they watch our show and that is a great responsibility.... I know for myself and I think for a lot of us, it was very intimidating in the beginning of shooting. Kind of getting any other side of that for me has been a challenge but it's been a wonderful adventure."

But don't feel bad for all of the hours of hard work she puts in, Bush loves being a part of the team.

"Truthfully I'm just ecstatic every day to be at work," she said. "It's such a wild ride. This isn't your dad's average cathedral. We're making a TV show for a major network that can support cinema-quality action sequences, but we're making it with a grit of a cable show. Like I said, it's a really surreal experience. It's something that I'm so grateful for ... If you've ever loved any of the different shows, (if) you've ever loved good suspense then this is the show for you."

Fans of One Tree Hill may still recognize her as Brooke Davis, the popular cheerleader who turned her small fashion line into a huge high end couture line called Clothes Over Bros (yes, that's the right spelling). Bush portrayed the character of Brooke Davis for nearly 10 years. I had the opportunity to ask her how that role compared to her new role on Chicago PD.

"It's a completely different experience, but that's also my job as an actor," she explained. "I think that I was incredibly fortunate to work on my last show for so long and to play such a wonderful character, but it's apples and oranges. That's why I really need such a concerted effort to work through the majority of the hiatus break that we took during the filming of One Tree Hill because my job to play different people and my job is to be a chameleon."

She is most certainly a chameleon. Audiences get to witness Sophia transform into a completely different type of character on her new show.

"What's really gratifying now is the number of people who have written to me on various social channels and talked about how much they love the show and how they are so excited by who Erin is, but also to be playing someone so different and to have it not be a strange experience for them after watching that show for so long and thinking it might be strange. It's very gratifying because that's my job. It just happened to be my last job for so long that people started I think to forget that I do other things ... I don't think I've ever had a better job than this one."

Apart from her new gig on NBC, Bush recently stopped by the set of Discovery Channel's MythBusters to play Princess Leia in a Star Wars-themed episode. She called it an absolute dream come true to get to be on the show. She was approached by the MythBusters team after her appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson where they ended up talking about her love for the show nearly the entire interview. Her particular myth to bust was from the scene where Luke and Leia are running from the Storm Troopers.

"They get caught in big chasm and he's got to use his grappling hook which was attached to his belt and hook it across the way on to this tiny pole and then hold the both of them and somehow hit the platform on the opposite side not drop her, not break the rope and all the things. I mean I guess it's not a rope. It was some futuristic piece of material, but we tested that myth," Bush said. "It's actually quite complicated to use one rope to swing two people across a great extent."

You can catch Sophia and the rest of the Chicago PD team on Wednesday's at 10/9 central on NBC. Follow Sophia on Twittter @SophiaBush and follow Chicago PD on Twitter @NBCChicagoPD.

Demi Lovato's looking good!

The "Let It Go" singer is feeling healthy and rested, and her fans are surely feeling jealous of her tropical travels. Lovato took to Twitter to post photos of herself relaxing and enjoying some down time. It looks like Lovato's on vacation, but she's actually working hard; the 21-year-old singer is currently training and preparing for her upcoming Neon Lights Tour.

The only casualty of her blissful surroundings? Her hair. Lovato doesn't seem too upset, however, that her locks have taken on a silver sheen as a result of her swimming.

Here's the real-life backdrop that Lovato's been able to gaze upon while she trains for her upcoming tour. Not too shabby.

Lovato's Neon Lights Tour will kick off in February of 2014 in Canada and run through May of 2014.

Kevin Bacon Reveals He First Met Wife Kyra Sedgwick When She Was 12 Years Old

This is either really sweet, or really creepy: Kevin Bacon was a guest on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" Monday (Jan. 13) and revealed how he first met his wife of 25 years, Kyra Sedgwick.

Bacon said he was doing a play in the '70s, and in a deli after the matinee performance "a little girl was in there who had just seen the matinee, and her brother said, 'You liked that actor, go tell him you liked him,' and it was Kyra," Bacon said.

"She was a little girl, yeah, she was 12 years old," added "The Following" star. With their seven-year age difference, Bacon was 19 at the time, so obviously they didn't start dating right then and there. It wasn't until they met again on the set of "Lemon Sky" in the '80s (when both were in their 20s) that they started their magical journey toward matrimony.

'Fargo' Star Billy Bob Thornton Thinks TV Is Becoming More Sophisticated Than Film

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Billy Bob Thornton said actors who want to work on sophisticated projects are finding them in television and not film.

He's proving the point with a starring role in the upcoming FX series "Fargo," inspired by the 1996 Joel and Ethan Coen movie. Thornton told a Television Critics Association meeting Tuesday that while Hollywood studios churn out action movies, broad comedies and "movies where apparently vampires are all models," TV offers the kind of insightful work once common in films.

He says that's why peers like Kevin Costner, Dennis Quaid and Kevin Bacon have turned to television.

"The entertainment business can pretend all they want, but the movie world has changed drastically, particularly in the last five or six years," said Thornton, who won a best-screenplay Oscar for "Sling Blade" and was nominated for his role in the 1996 film.

"If you want to be an actor, get on a really good series in television because there's where it's at," said Thornton, whose neatly groomed hair contrasted with striped pants decorated with buttons, embellished cowboy boots and a sleeveless black T-shirt that showed numerous arm tattoos.

"Fargo" also stars Martin Freeman of "Sherlock" and the "Hobbit" films. It debuts in April on FX.

'American Horror Story' Season 4 Will Be Set In 1950

Get ready for some classic 1950s horror.

As is to be expected, "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy has been elusive about what we can expect in Season 4 of the hit FX series.

But on Wednesday (Jan. 15), Murphy finally divulged a few details.

“It’s set in 1950,” Murphy exclusively told EW. “If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues in that year. It’s a period piece. We try and do the opposite of what we’ve done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I’m very excited!”

Although "Coven" (the show's current installment) is set in present day, the series is known to jump from one time period to another. "Coven" has some flashbacks to the Salem Witch Trials, and Season 2 ("Asylum") was set mostly in the 1960s.

Needless to say, we can't wait for more Season 4 details to emerge.

George Clooney Pranked Matt Damon In A Very 'Mean Girls' Way

Looks like George Clooney may have watched "Mean Girls" one too many times.

Matt Damon was a guest on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" Tuesday (Jan. 14) and told the host that on the set of his and Clooney's new movie, "The Monuments Men," the perennial prankster played a trick on him that reads like a script full of high school meanies.

Apparently, Clooney had Damon's pants taken in every couple of days by "about an eighth or a sixteenth of an inch" which made superhunk Damon think he was gaining a whole bunch of weight -- after the two men's mutual decision to "get in shape"!

"I was working out, and the pants [were getting tighter] -- I said, 'This just can't be,'" Damon explained. "I never said anything to him, which he probably loved even more."

Oy, George. You rascal.

Brace yourselves, Marshmallows. A "Veronica Mars" spinoff is coming to The CW.

Well, specifically the spinoff will be on The CW's digital platform, CW Seed, but that's not the point. The point is "Veronica Mars" is getting a spinoff.

While there aren't really any specific details about the web series to report just yet, The CW president Mark Pedowitz announced that he had spoken with "Veronica" creator Rob Thomas. "He's very excited about doing this for CW seed. It may not appear before the film comes out," said Pedowitz according to The Hollywood Reporter. Pedowtiz added, "[Thomas] told me about his schedule, and I said, 'We'll take it whenever you're ready.'"

Which actors will be returning is yet to be determined, but this on top of the release of the "Veronica Mars" movie makes 2014 a good year to be a Marshmallow.

Lady Sybil is headed for the "Labyrinth."

No, Jessica Brown-Findlay (Lady Sybil from "Downton Abbey") isn't going all Jennifer Connelly on us (can you imagine?) but she is going to be starring in a new CW miniseries that shares the same name as the Jim Henson fantasy classic.

Though in this "Labyrinth" Brown-Findlay won't be searching for her kidnapped little brother, but instead for the Holy Grail.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the miniseries "will jump back and forth between modern and medieval France by following the lives of two women who are separated by centuries, but united in their search for the Holy Grail." Brown-Findlay will play Alaïs, whose father gives her a book guiding her to where the religious relic can be found.

Bruce Dern On His Oscar Nomination And What Project Might Be Next (VIDEO)

Bruce Dern's day got off to an amazing start when he scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor on Thursday morning (Jan. 16) for his work in "Nebraska," his second Oscar nod in a film career that spans more than half a century.

Just hours after Dern learned of his latest success, he joined HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri to discuss his nomination and the film that's earned him unanimous critical praise. When Dern last visited HuffPost Live in December of 2013, Camilleri asked if all the awards buzz meant Dern's phone was ringing off the hook with offers for new roles. At the time, Dern said "the son-of-a-b--ch hasn't rung yet," but it seems his fortune has changed as he inches closer to a taste of Oscar gold.

"It is starting to ring, and I had a wonderful conversation with Quentin [Tarantino] about three or four weeks ago, and that was a very productive conversation and hopefully something like that comes along," he said. "It appears to be on its way and that's good."

The only issue for Dern, who has said he doesn't campaign for awards or consider them in choosing his roles, is that getting Oscar buzz is sometimes the only way to be considered for meaty parts.

"It's too bad that it takes a certain kind of recognition to make you get phone calls," he said. "You would think the work does it."

In the meantime, Dern is enjoying the attention for "Nebraska." He was jubilant about Oscar nominations for his co-star June Squibb for Best Supporting Actress and director Alexander Payne, who Dern said has gone "six for six" on making critically beloved films. But he was disappointed that another cast mate didn't make the cut.

"I feel bad that Will [Forte] didn't get included, but you know what? Will's performance makes 'Nebraska' work," he said.

'Duck Dynasty' Ratings Are Down Dramatically From Last Season

Fans no longer give a quack about "Duck Dynasty."

TV Line reports that 8.5 million people tuned in for the fifth season premiere of "Duck Dynasty" on Wednesday (Jan. 15), down from 12 million viewers who watched the fourth season premiere.

In the highly sought after age demographic of 18-49, only 4.2 million tuned in.

When Phil Robertson insulted black people and gay people back in December, creating a huge uproar in the media, fans passionately defended the patriarch, but the ratings haven't held up.

Could this be the beginning of the end for "Duck Dynasty?"

"Duck Dynasty" airs Wed. at 10 p.m. EST on A&E.

Kate Gosselin's 'Today Show' Interview Gets Cringeworthy When Twins Go Silent

Kate Gosselin had a cringeworthy interview on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning (Jan. 16) when her teenage twin daughters refused to talk about how great their family is after reality television fame.

Kate and her 13-year-olds, Mady and Cara, went on the NBC talk show to discuss their lives since their TLC reality show ended two years ago. The interview comes on the heels of a People magazine article about how the public has mistakenly assumed they are "damaged." But, when they were prompted with questions by host Savannah Guthrie, the Gosselin girls went silent.

"Mady, your words," Kate said, as her daughter struggled to come up with a response. "It's your chance. Spit it out."

When Guthrie turned to Cara, she stared blankly.

"So this is their chance to talk," the mother of eight said. "This is the most wordless I've heard them all morning. I don't want to speak for them, but, Mady, go ahead. Sort of the things that you said in the magazine. That, years later, they're good, they're fine. Go for it, Mad, it's your chance."

"No, you just said it," the child replied.

Kate attempted to salvage the interview by saying everything has been good in the Gosselin home despite the divorce battle that has played out between she and her ex-husband, Jon. Most recently, Jon claimed Kate is "exploiting" their children for publicity during an interview with InTouch magazine.

On Thursday, she claimed putting her kids in the limelight has been a family decision, not one that she has made on her own.

"It's really frustrating when there's so much out there that is not true," she said. "I'm getting to the point where I'm extremely frustrated. And I don't spend time worrying about it because I'm busy raising my kids. We know the truth and that's why they're here -- even though they're tongue tied this morning -- to say that, 'Hey, we're okay. We're doing well.' Would that be accurate, girls, to say?"

Hugh Hefner's Wife Is Renting Out Her Hollywood Home

If you've an extra $32,000 a month you'd like to spend then this is your opportunity to live like a Playboy (or at least rent like one). Though this deal can't guarantee the gorgeous grotto, breathtaking grounds that house a full zoo or glamorous vintage game room spotted over at the Playboy Mansion, according to a Relator.com listing, the property bought for the new Mrs. Hefner in her mother's name, is officially on the market.

And while it may pale in comparison to the Playboy Mansion itself, the ultra-modern, four-bedroom, five-bath home, which was built in 2011, still has some pretty impressive features of its own that any renter would enjoy. Purchased for an estimated $4.9 million in May of last year so his 27-year-old wife would have a roof over her head when he's away, the Hollywood Hills estate includes a deluxe master suite with telescoping doors, custom floating wood staircases and a white glass infinity pool and spa, all situated on 5,917 square feet.

But if you're more of a buyer and not a renter, then we suggest you wait a bit longer. Though the pair has been happily married since the winter of 2012, Harris ditched her blonde hair for a new 'do earlier this month. And seeing as Hef hasn't dated a brunette since the 70s, there's always a chance the home will be up for sale if the wedded bliss comes to a screeching halt...

Speculating 'American Horror Story' Season 4

$
0
0
As “American Horror Story: Coven” comes to a close, with only two episodes remaining, everyone’s speculating what the fourth season of Ryan Murphy’s game-changing series will be about.

The writer and co-creator has warned fans to keep an eye out for Season 4 easter eggs in the remaining “Coven” episodes, and shared a few hints on Wednesday (Jan. 15). “It’s set in the 1950s,” Murphy revealed, adding, “If you look historically [at] what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues.” He also reassured us that Jessica Lange will be returning for the fourth season, hinting that she’s been “practicing her German accent.”

Since we’re far too impatient (and excited) to wait for Murphy to leak more clues, we’ve devised a list of our own speculations for what to expect in the next season. We may be totally wrong, but a lil guessing never hurt. Sound off your guesses (and any easter eggs you may have found in “Coven”) in the comments!

Could “AHS” revisit aliens with the Roswell incident?
tv show gifs
With Murphy’s hint that the new season would be set (or shot) in New Mexico (or New Orleans), it's possible the season could involve the Roswell UFO crash, which took place in 1947. It seems an unlikely choice though, since after "Asylum," Murphy has said he was done with aliens. But some Reddit users still have their UFO theories.

The establishment of the Stasi, or German secret police?
The secret police of East Germany, known as the Stasi, were one of the most feared and hated institutions. Since the service was formed in February of 1950, this premise, while incredibly broad, would fit with both of Murphy's clues on the time frame and Lange's accent.

The creation of the hydrogen bomb?
hydrogen bomb test
Since the Soviet Union conducted their first test of the hydrogen bomb in September 1949, and the U.S. began testing their own soon after, this could be a possible setup for the show. Yet, shouldn't Lange be working on a Russian accent if this were the case? Also, while the nuclear arms race was indeed a terrifying time in history, this doesn't seem a suitable fit for the show's stylized, shocking horror.

From witch hunts to Communist hunts?
One possible storyline for Season 4 could be the rise of McCarthyism during the Second Red Scare, which occurred from 1950 to 1956. Other than the date, there's not a whole lot that supports this theory just yet, except this one Reddit user's in-depth theory regarding a possible easter egg from episode 11.

The Korean War?
One of the main historical events of 1950 was the Korean War, however warface isn't exactly an appropriate (or enjoyable) topic for "AHS."

Are we going to the circus?
american horror story
This is the rumor we all wish was real. Last week, fan-made posters, and even a trailer -- and incredibly convincing ones at that -- surfaced on Tumblr advertising that Season 4 is set in a circus or carnival. This premise would give Murphy the perfect opportunity to cash in on a bizarre and freaky culture, especially one that has gone mostly untouched in pop culture for decades, since 1930s cult film "Freaks." Murphy already paid homage to the film with Pepper in "Asylum," so maybe he could expand on that? Someone please start a petition to make this happen.

"American Horror Story: Scientology"?
Another 1950s event was the introduction of L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics, or concepts of the metaphysical relationship between the mind and body. The Scientology founder published his first article on the topic in May of 1950. While it would be freaky and kind of awesome for "AHS" to dive into the mysterious world of Scientology, it's probably too daring of a topic to tackle in the television, or film, industry.

Keep your eyes peeled for more easter eggs to come in the remaining two "AHS" episodes.

"American Horror Story: Coven" airs on FX on Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. EST.
