'Night Moves' Premieres At Venice

Associated Press — Indie filmmaker Kelly Reichardt, for the sake of her dog, drives back and forth between her New York home and the Oregonian landscape that shapes her films, noting along the way the increasing toll of industrialization.

The observation has relevance for her latest film, `'Night Moves," which tells the story of three young environmentalists who plot to blow up an Oregon dam choking a stream and flooding old forests. The plotline puts front and center the issue of eco-terrorism – a term that Reichardt does not endorse.

`'I would call it direct activism," Reichardt said in an interview Saturday ahead of the film's world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival. `'But if there is radicalism, I guess I would say it is on behalf of the corporations. When I drive cross-country and I see the face of America, to me it feels radical in how little remains untouched."

`'Nightmoves," a thriller at heart, but with Reichardt's thoughtful pacing, stars Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard as environmentalists who have chosen a radical – and perilous – action to protest environmental degradation.

Reichardt films in detail as the three organize the bombing, revealing the edginess of Eisenberg's Josh, the almost carefree calm of Fanning's Dena and the cavalier daring in Sargaard's Harmon as they buy a boat, figure out how to get another 500 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer and prepare the explosives. They are alternately meticulous and careless.

`'These are not professionals" Reichardt said. `'Harmon has a sort of casualness that makes him dangerous and Dena is at an age that makes her so self-assured, at least at the beginning."

She describes Josh as `'a pretty dark character. He has a lot to feel really, really right about, and that can be dangerous."

Reichardt insists the film is not a meant to make a political statement. Rather `'it's really a character film, and just based on what I think would be the conversation of our time."

And she deflects questions about whether she reveals details that might be useful to would-be copycats.

`'There was so much on the Internet, if you wanted a manual," she said during a press conference. `'I am not sure the film celebrates the glory. It is about the complexity of radicals, and I think the downsides are equally weighed."

The scenery informs this movie, as in all of Reichardt's work, and Fanning said filming on location brought the dilemmas home to her. `'There is a scene when they are on the boat going through a tree grave yard, with stumps sticking out of the water. They used to be trees, but the dam has changed the level of the water," Fanning said in an interview.

Fanning said she could understand the characters' frustration with general apathy in the face of environmental destruction, but she also said she how small projects can make a difference when she was invited recently on a tour of five African nations with former President Bill Clinton's foundation.

`'I think the three characters are all looking for that kind of connected feeling and this is their way of feeling plugged into the world, and plugged into the movement and activism," she said. `'Their maybe rash choice is from a place of just wanting to feel a part of it, and kind of being annoyed at the rest of the people around them that they are not seeing it."

`'I think it happens with all kinds of different things and not just activism. I certainly have moments where I'm like, `Am I the only person who feels this way? Seriously?," Fanning said.

Eisenberg worked for several months on the organic farm that was Reichardt's starting point for the film, living in a yurt and working in cabbage fields – an experience that helped the actor connect with his character's motives.

`'It just gives you a different sense of living," Eisenberg said. `'When you are planting the food that you eat, you feel a direct sense with interacting with the world for practical reasons, and alternatively you are feeling disgusted by a lot of modernity just by being separate from it. That is what my character is mainly driven by.

`'My character thinks of himself as a soldier in a war fighting what he views as modern society that's been co-opted by business and technology," he said. "I suppose there is a kind of irony if he is fighting to create a more beautiful, peaceful and sustainable environment, but doing it through kind of dangerous means. He views his acts as right and just, and he views the damage as collateral damage. `'

Four fabulous friends living fast-paced lives in New York City -- Kiyah, Chenoa, Bershan, and Tiffany -- are about to become the new faces of reality television. On Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 10 p.m. ET, OWN will air the first full episode of "Crazy.Sexy.Life." as a special sneak preview to the original docu-series, which premieres in early 2014.

Through their laughter, romances, and life-altering struggles, these ladies are learning that there is much more than just sex in the city. They don't always see eye-to-eye and spend a lot of time dealing with conflicts that arise between their big personalities. But under it all, they have an incredibly strong bond and always support each other as they deal with their own unique life challenges.

In this five-minute clip of the first episode, viewers meet 39-year-old Kiyah, "the ring leader" -- an ambitious and successful celebrity hair stylist whose focus on her career and life on the road has prevented her from putting down roots -- until now. With a younger, 27-year-old boyfriend in L.A., she has children on her mind. "I'm successful, but when you get older you start to think, 'Damn, what if my time is really up? Did I miss my moment?'" she says.

Chenoa is "the risk taker" who has put her professional life as an actress and photographer on hold to build a family. After fertility issues, she finds herself struggling to maintain her relationship while simultaneously trying to refocus on her career.

Bershan, "the survivor," could not be slowed down, even by stage four breast cancer. She lives an affluent lifestyle thanks to her husband, but doesn't want to be a kept woman. A former bartender turned restaurateur, she's ready to regain her independence and become the businesswoman she once was.

"The free spirit," Tiffany, is vivacious and fashionable, running a chic boutique in SoHo. A breast cancer survivor herself, she lives every day like there is no tomorrow. After her first marriage ended, she's now rediscovering love at age 38 with a new man. "This is my first real relationship," Tiffany says.

The full-episode sneak preview of "Crazy.Sexy.Life" airs Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

Panettiere maintains her healthy figure by opting for nutritious meals such as egg-white scrambles with veggies, and chicken or fish with greens, she told Self last year.

"I've grown into myself and my body," she added. "In Nashville, you see women, even successful singers, who have voluptuous bodies and everyone is supportive. You don't get the kind of criticism you might in Hollywood. To me, the confident curvy girl is so much sexier than the insecure skinny girl."

Public Enemy played a highly anticipated set at Jay Z's Made in America Festival on Saturday, bringing their brand of oldschool hip hop and political commentary to Philadelphia. Dakota Johnson has been cast as Anastasia Steele in "50 Shades Of Grey," this according to author E L James who tweeted the news on Monday. Johnson was first rumored for the role in a report from TheWrap on Aug. 22.

Johnson, whose parents are Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, is best known for her work on the short-lived Fox sitcom "Ben & Kate." She also had memorable supporting roles in "The Social Network" and "The Five-Year Engagement." Her casting ends a months-long search for Anastasia, one which saw actresses like Emma Watson, Shailene Woodley, Alicia Vikander and Analeigh Tipton mentioned as possibilities for the coveted role. James' novel, the first in a trilogy, focuses on a young woman who finds herself involved in a sexual affair with the title character, Christian Grey. Charlie Hunnam was cast in that role on Monday as well.

Focus Features will release "50 Shades of Grey" on Aug. 1, 2014. Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing the project.

Deadline.com also reported on Johnson's casting, claiming an exclusive on the story despite the fact that James' tweet happened a full 11 minutes before the site published.

There's nothing wrong with experimenting with wigs to test out different hairstyles, as Lady Gaga have proven time and time again. But every so often, doesn't even Gaga want to ditch the high-maintenance pieces and embrace her natural hair?

Turns out she does. Gaga shed her wig onstage at the iTunes Festival in London on Sunday, telling fans she had been using "wigs and make-up" to "cover up the pain," reports the BBC.

She announced to the crowd:

"When I didn't feel strong enough to be me, I created someone else. And it worked. So here I am, the human underneath the wigs... This is my real hair."

And with that, she removed the wig to reveal... lovely, plain brown hair. Her natural tresses -- and the human beneath the wigs -- are pretty enviable all on their own.

Kudos, Lady Gaga, for feeling strong enough to go au naturel -- doesn't it feel great?

Former Heavyweight Champ, 'Rocky V' Star Dies

$

Tommy Morrison, the former heavyweight champion who stood toe-to-toe with Lennox Lewis and George Foreman and later tested positive for HIV, died Monday. He was 44.

Morrison died Sunday night at a Nebraska hospital, said Tony Holden, his longtime promoter and close friend. The family would not disclose the cause of death.

In 1993, Morrison beat Foreman to win the WBO heavyweight title, only to lose it to unheralded Michael Bentt in a defeat that scuttled a showdown with Lewis. Morrison would fight Lewis a couple of years later, getting knocked out in the sixth round in Atlantic City, N.J.

Morrison, nicknamed "The Duke," never reached the status of such contemporaries as Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, but it was surely a full career.

He was a prodigious puncher whose bid to fight in the 1988 Seoul Olympics ended at the hands of Ray Mercer, who later dealt Morrison his first professional loss. He had a starring role in "Rocky V" alongside Sylvester Stallone. And perhaps most memorably, Morrison tested positive for HIV when the virus still carried a significant stigma, only to declare later the test was false.

Along with numerous legal issues, including a prison sentence that stemmed from weapons and drunk driving, Morrison's name became attached to headlines that would eventually overshadow his work in the ring.

"If Tommy was fighting today, he no doubt would be a world champion," Holden said. "You have to look at who he was fighting in the `90s, the guys in that division were Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Ray Mercer, George Foreman. There's no one with that talent today. Tommy would absolutely dominate if he were in his prime boxing today."

Morrison won his first 28 professional fights, beating faded champions such as Pinklon Thomas along the way. His career reached its apex in the summer of 1993 with a unanimous decision over Foreman, then in the midst of his comeback, to claim a vacant title.

As with so many things in Morrison's life, the good was quickly followed by the bad.

Morrison was in line for a high-profile bout with Lewis when he was upset by Bentt in Tulsa, Okla., not far from where Morrison was raised. He was knocked down three times and the fight was called before the first round ended.

Along with the stinging defeat, Morrison saw a potential $7.5 million payday for a title unification fight against Lewis wash away.

"I zigged when I should have zagged," Morrison said afterward. "It's one of those situations you have to live with and learn from it. I'll be back."

Morrison indeed came back, but he was never the same feared fighter. He beat a bunch of long shots and faded stars over the next couple of years before his loss to Lewis.

That fight happened in October 1995. By February, Morrison had tested positive for HIV.

He'd been preparing for another fight that winter when his blood test came back positive for the virus that causes AIDs. Morrison's license was quickly suspended by Nevada, and the ban was, in effect, upheld by every other sanctioning body. Morrison said at a news conference he'd never fight again, blaming his plight on a "permissive, fast and reckless lifestyle."

His lifestyle never changed, though, even when he stepped away from the ring.

He had already run afoul of the law in 1993, when he pleaded guilty to assaulting a college student. He also dealt with weapons charges and multiple DUI incidents over the years. He was finally sentenced to two years in prison in 2000, and another year was added to his sentence in 2002 for violating parole.

When he was released, Morrison said his HIV tests had resulted in false positives, and he wanted to resume his career. He passed medical tests in Arizona – even as Nevada stood by its decision – and returned to the ring. Morrison fought twice more in his career, winning once in West Virginia and for the final time in Mexico. He finished with a record of 48-3-1 with 42 knockouts.

"Tommy's a very stubborn person and he views things the way he wants to view things. That's his right and privilege," Holden said. "All through his career, him and I would come not to physical blows but disagreements on certain things. We always ended up friends. That was Tommy.

"That's the way Tommy took off after he was told he was HIV-positive," Holden added. "When he first was told, I was taking him to seek treatment and to different doctors around the country. And then he started research on the Internet and started saying it was a conspiracy. He went in that direction and never looked back."

Charlie Hunnam Cast As Lead In '50 Shades Of Grey'

Charlie Hunnam has been cast in "50 Shades of Grey" as Christian Grey, this according to author E L James who tweeted the news on Monday. An hour earlier, James had revealed that Dakota Johnson would star in the film as Anastasia Steele.

Hunnam was rumored for the "50 Shades" lead role back on Aug. 20, when the website Twitch Film reported that he was in talks for the part. Hunnam starred this summer in the Warner Bros. film "Pacific Rim" and also leads the hit FX series "Sons of Anarchy." At the time, Variety debunked the Hunnam report, noting that a "studio insider" said no casting decision had been made just yet -- a curious shoot-down if only because the original Twitch scoop did not state that Hunnam had the part. That's all academic now, however, as the 33-year-old has won the coveted role.

He'll star opposite Johnson, 23, in the film, which is based the first entry in James' erotic novel trilogy. Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct the film.

"50 Shades of Grey" is out in theaters on Aug. 1, 2014.

RECORD-BREAKING SUMMER

NEW YORK — Despite some spectacular flops, Hollywood's summer concluded with a record $4.7 billion in box-office revenue.

The summer movie season closed out on Labor Day weekend as the boy band concert film "One Direction: This Is Us" took in an estimated $18 million from Friday to Monday for Sony Pictures, according to studio estimates Monday. That wasn't enough to unseat "Lee Daniels' The Butler," which stayed on top with $20 million.

It was a positive note to end the summer for Hollywood. More than ever before, the industry packed the summer months with big-budget blockbusters that ranged from the hugely successful "Iron Man 3" to the disastrous "The Lone Ranger."

The box office saw a 10.2 percent increase over last summer, with attendance rising 6.6 percent.

One Direction Halts Traffic In NYC For Premiere Of This Is Us

2013-09-02-ThisIsUsonedirectionafterpartyatmospheregothamhall.jpg
Louis, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Harry of One Direction drew a huge crowd for their world premiere of One Direction: This Is Us at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York last Monday August 26th. Traffic on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues was going in "one direction": nowhere! This area of midtown was at standstill as thousands of hysterical girls and a few boy fans converged on the theater in order to catch a glimpse, and maybe even a pic of their idols was reminiscent of Beatlemania, or maybe more like Leif Garrett-mania. Thankfully my usual red carpet bromee, Celebrity Chef Chris Nirschel and I decided last minute to blow off the Boring US Open opening night ceremony and hit the 1D carpet instead. Once we made it past countless checkpoints and barricades, we posed for a few pictures on the official @1DThisIsUs Twitter feed. Little did we know our Twitter accounts were just about to crash with followers and their comments. Hey, I'm grateful for any new followers, even if they're the result of being mistaken for Zayn's father. God, I'm old! On the carpet we spotted the boys hamming it up for countless selfies with their fans, and were flanked by more security guards than 5 Tom Cruises, and drew a crowd equal to just as many. Upon entering the theater, we witnessed the boys goofing around while hitting up the concession stand for some popcorn and soda before taking their seats. Boys will be boys, or in this case, millionaires will be boys who can goof off and not get in trouble because they have more protection than a Hugh Hefner prenup. About the movie: Well, I wish I could tell you about it other than it was Morgan Spurlock's first concert documentary. Fortunately, we didn't stay, but I did get a nice t-shirt, 3D glasses, and chatted it up with Stephen Baldwin who was there body guarding his 17-year- old daughter Hailey. On the way out I was lucky enough to score one of the official movie posters (one of several) hung along the red carpet to bring home to my 14yr old daughter (what a good dad). I thought for sure we would be mauled to death for this poster as we hurried past the hundreds of screaming fans and darted into a waiting cab. Luckily, they were still too crazed over seeing the band to notice the old men dashing by. The after-party was held at Gotham Hall and was filled with hundreds of tweens, their moms, and a dad or 2 (lets not forget Stephen). Nirschel and I were given our 21 and over wrist stamp shaped like a wine bottle and immediately hit the bar ordering our usual Jack-n-diet Cokes, planning to head out early since we were the only creepy old dudes there over 30 (and without kids, and holding a One Direction poster). Once we hit the main dance-floor we spotted a beautiful blonde we saw earlier on the carpet named Madeline Brewer. Brewer plays a corn-row haired drug addicted inmate with a neck tattoo on a Netflix series called Orange Is The New Black, ever hear of it?? It's one I have never heard of and apparently very popular, then again, I'm old and unpopular. Brewer told me she got some inspiration for the roll by consulting with some people she knew in her home town in N.J. that have struggled with drug use, but had never actually done drugs or spent any time in a real jail. After about an hr of the usual after-party stuff---You know-- hot buffet, top shelf booze, screaming girls and celebs hiding in corners (a weeknight at home for Charlie Sheen), we decided to head in one direction: Towards the door!
