Director Pleads Case To Studio In Title Fight: 'I Am Heartbroken'

The battle between Warner Bros. and The Weinstein Company over the "The Butler" took another turn on Wednesday when director Lee Daniels sent a letter to Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara requesting that the studio back off from its attempt to force "The Butler" to change titles.

"I have spent the last four years of my life working on the film, 'The Butler,' and it is the proudest moment of my professional career. I am heartbroken as I write this letter to you," Daniels wrote in the letter, which was provided to Deadline.com and also The Hollywood Reporter. "If we were to change the title a mere six weeks before we open, it would most certainly hurt the film by limiting the number of people who would ultimately see this important story."

Daniels' film tells the story of Eugene Allen (played by Forest Whitaker), a White House staffer who served through eight administrations. The film's all-star cast includes Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Robin Williams, Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda. Daniels, who has pushed the envelope in films like "Precious" and "The Paperboy," has said previously how difficult it was for him to even make a film like "The Butler," which is likely to score a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (and, perhaps, Oscar nominations early next year).

“I can’t go into my bag of tricks on this one: no urination, no baby falling down the stairs, no cursing at all," he told THR. "We only have one ‘f-ck,’ which Lyndon Johnson gets. I felt like I directed the film in handcuffs and a muzzle."

Regardless of the process, "The Butler" is ready to go: The Weinstein Company has the film set for release on Aug. 16. The issue surrounding the film's title stems from the fact that Warner Bros. has a short film in its archive from 1916 that's also called "The Butler." As Variety reported, Warner Bros. won its arbitration case with the MPAA, but TWC has appealed the decision.

"The Warner Bros, 1916 short has not been displayed or exhibited for almost a century and there is no plausible basis to contend that there is any chance of confusion between the two productions," TWC lawyer David Boies said in a letter to Warner Bros. and the MPAA (provided, again, to Deadline.com).

It should be noted that many films have been released with the same title in the past, including Best Picture winners "Gladiator" and "Crash."

Will He Stay Or Will He Go?

The jury's still out on whether or not Jason Sudeikis will return to "Saturday Night Live" for another season, but the comedian is finally dropping a few hints.

In an interview with Modern Luxury, Sudeikis opened up about his rumored departure.

“You never really leave that place, and it never leaves you,” he said. “It’s an emotional journey getting through a season, much less the final one.”

Sudeikis certainly makes it sound like he's done, but in May he revealed that he hadn't yet made his decision. "I sincerely don't know at this point," Sudeikis told Barbara Walters on "The View."

Fred Armisen, another rumored departure, confirmed that he had finished his "SNL" run last week.

"I think it's clear," Armisen said in an interview with Splitsider. "I didn't do any kind of official announcement, but I really felt like it was obvious. An ending that was a love letter to all the music I grew up with, and also to my friends and to SNL and to Lorne and to the cast. There was a lot of emotion attached to it, but it was a very positive emotion."

James Cameron, Walnut Farmer?

From Mother Nature Network's Michael d'Estries:

James Cameron is a celebrated filmmaker, ocean explorer, environmentalists, and as of last week - a commercial walnut farmer.

Stuff.co.nz is reporting that the 58-year-old has been given permission by New Zealand officials to purchase a working walnut farm named Pinnacle Grove near his current 2500-acre farm in Wairarapa on the North Island. In addition, he also purchased some 25-acres nearby. From the site:

“It said Cameron planned to continue to operate the orchard as a working walnut orchard, and that the vendors would also help him to establish walnut trees on Pouinui Station, which Cameron acquired last year.”

That Cameron would choose to pursue farming is not surprising considering his family history.

”I grew up working on my grandfather’s farm in Canada and my wife Suzy’s family own a farm in Oklahoma,” he said last year. ”We want to raise our kids with the values we had when we were growing up, close to the land and with a strong work ethic. We hope we will be accepted as good neighbours and good members of the community in South Wairarapa.”

According to the Pinnacle Grove website, the orchard is in harmony with Cameron's green values - using a sustainable approach that incorporates natural fertilisers and pest-repellents where possible.

"Pinnacle Grove produces some of New Zealands’s finest walnuts and supplies both shelled and whole walnuts to a selection of New Zealand’s top restaurants," the site reads. "Their high quality Meyric walnuts, sweet and nutty to taste, are nutritious and visually appealing to enhance any dish."

That Cameron would pursue some kind of plant-based farming operation is not surprising. Just last month, while being honored at the National Geographic Society's 125th anniversary gala, the "Avatar" director urged those in attendance to consider a more animal-friendly diet.

“I’ve had an epiphany recently,” Cameron said. “I want to challenge all of you as people of deep conscience, people who are environment stewards of the earth and oceans … By changing what you eat, you will change the entire contract between the human species and the natural world."

In an interview with the NY Times last year, Cameron revealed that he was transitioning the dairy farm on his recently-purchased New Zealand farm to something more eco-friendly. "We’re looking for something more crop based,” he explained. “I don’t want to be a hypocrite.”

Appearing in a revealing maroon monokini and a curly brunette wig, Amanda Seyfried is channeling famed porn actress Linda Lovelace in the newly released teaser for the upcoming biopic about the "Deep Throat" star.

Other than donning a monokini reminiscent of the outfit worn by Lovelace on the 1972 porno's original movie poster, Seyfried is also pictured in a polka dot dress and other outfits reflecting the style of the time.

Dramatic makeover aside, Seyfried has reportedly read Lovelace's books and studied videos of the porn star in preparation for her racy role. The "Mean Girls" star has also said that she watched "Deep Throat" to get a sense of what she was getting herself into.

"What surprised me was the amount of pubic hair!" Seyfried told Glamour magazine last year of watching the infamous film.

James Franco, Chloe Sevigny and Sharon Stone also star in "Lovelace," scheduled to hit theaters in August. Watch the film's trailer above.

No Beer For You!

Whether it's because they dress older, look older or just plain party like they've been doing it for years, some celebrities are so cool they make us forget that they still can't kick back with a beer. And while it may be legal for them to enjoy booze in their international hometowns (ahem, Justin Bieber), the fact remains they're still not allowed to do that in this country until they turn 21. For some, that birthday is much closer than it is for others, but either way, it's safe to say that if these celebs celebrate the Fourth of July holiday this week, it should be sans alcohol.

Channing Tatum Can't Stop Talking About Sex

OK ladies, brace yourselves because this one is a doozy.

Channing Tatum has been making the rounds lately, promoting his new flick "White House Down" while talking about his new life as a proud papa to 1-month-old daughter Everly. But in an interview with Elle, Tatum can't stop gushing about his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum and their, um, sex secrets?

First off, Tatum, 33, admits that every time he and Jenna, 32, watch "The Notebook" -- YES, Channing Tatum has watched Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams fall in love on-screen multiple times -- she gets in "the mood."

"I don’t know if I have a baby-making movie. But every time we watch 'The Notebook,' my wife looks at me while she’s crying and makes me promise we’re going to die together in bed," he admits. "I’m like, 'Can we not talk about how we’re going to die?'"

And although Jenna was pregnant for most of this year, Tatum makes it sound like he spent plenty of time in the bedroom with his wife of four years. When asked if it's true that pregnant women want to have sex all the time, Tatum tells Elle, "It’s a bit of a paradox. They’re definitely hormonally raging, but when they get further along -- they’re just dealing all the time. So, yes and no."

And aside from showing off his passionate side by sculpting figurines of Jenna's body -- "Not pregnant. Her old body," he laughs -- Tatum loves to be naked pretty much all the time.

"I have a really nice back porch where the pool is. Once the shoes are off, the socks come off too, and then everything else downstairs just follows at some point," he confesses.

"Chan gets home [and] he strips off all of his clothes," Jenna told Ellen DeGeneres during an appearance on her show last year. "But he leaves it right by the front door so ... this is not a bad thing, I know, this is not a bad thing ... but at the end of the night I'm always having to pick up his clothes."

Yeah that is NOT a bad thing.

Obama's Tactics Are A 'Digrace'

Politically outspoken director Oliver Stone called Edward Snowden a "hero" during a Fourth of July appearance at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The Oscar winner also blasted President Barack Obama for his "George Bush-style eavesdropping techniques," calling the controversies a "disgrace."

"To me, Snowden is a hero, because he revealed secrets that we should all know, that the United States has repeatedly violated the Fourth Amendment." Stone said. "He should be welcomed, and offered asylum, but he has no place to hide because every country is intimidated by the United States. ... Everyone in the world is impacted by the United States' Big Brother attitude toward the world."

Stone attended the festival to screen episodes of "Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States," his 10-episode documentary series that depicts the country from World War II through the War on Terror. The event also screened "Scarface," which Stone wrote, and the "ultimate" cut of the director's critically panned 2004 epic "Alexander."

The director, also known for "Platoon" and "Born on the Fourth of July," warned those who attended his press conference -- mostly European journalists, according to The Wrap -- that "we need countries to say no to the United States."

"The world is in danger with our tyranny," Stone said.

Screen legend Helen Mirren has some stern advice for Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan.

When asked what she would tell the troubled starlets and other young wayward celebrities in a recent interview with Joelle Garguilo, Mirren, who is currently promoting her upcoming film "Red 2," was brutally frank, saying:

"I don't know if you're allowed to say this on television: Don't be up your own bum ... People get up their own [bum], and you really don't need to. It's the thing of the young, and just don't do that."

Bynes and Lohan have been making headlines in recent months for all the wrong reasons.

Other than prompting feudswithother celebs, Bynes has been raising eyebrows with her erratic behavior and bizarre tweets of late; Lohan, on the other hand, was sentenced to 90 days of "locked-down" rehab earlier this year for reckless driving in June 2012.

Infamous for her hard-partying ways, Lohan, who checked herself into rehab in May, is said to be "terrified" of relapsing into addiction once she's out in the world again, according to TMZ.

Yes, July 4th is America's birthday, but other very notable people share that date. So, let's salute those with the more interesting names. It makes for quite a diverse little birthday party -- from Nathaniel Hawthorne, born in 1804, to First Daughter Malia Obama, born in 1998. But we won’t be including three who erroneously claimed the date as their own -- composer George "born on the Fourth of July" M. Cohan, MGM’s Louis B. Mayer and Louis Armstrong, whose real date of birth was August 4th.

Brody Jenner Talks Avril Lavigne's Wedding

The last time we heard from Brody Jenner, he was saying goodbye to Kristen Cavallari on the series finale of "The Hills," dating Canadian Playboy Playmate of the Year Jayde Nicole and being active on Twitter.

That is until the curly-haired met, dated and split up with Canadian pop-punk goddess Avril Lavigne, guest-starred on a little reality TV show called "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" (you may have heard of it) and got himself a new model girlfriend.

Now that Brody's back in the news, we can't stop talking about the 29-year-old, whether it's about his resentment towards absentee dad Bruce Jenner, his sexy beach body or whether he still talks to reality TV's most-loved villain, Spencer Pratt.

But the one topic we at HuffPost Canada TV can't stop wondering about is what the former "Princes of Malibu" star thinks about ex Avril Lavigne's wedding to Nickeback frontman, Chad Kroeger, which took place on Canada Day. We chatted with Brody Jenner about his thoughts on Chavril's nuptials, what he thinks about half-sister Kim Kardashian's baby name and what he knows about the alternative "The Hills" ending.

HuffPost TV: I'm Canadian and you've dating a few Canadians in the past [most notably Avril Lavigne and Jayde Nicole]...
Brody Jenner: Canadians are the best, they're the best.

So what do you think about Avril Lavigne's relationship and wedding to Chad Kroeger?
I'm very happy for them, I hope that they're very happy. Avril and I are still friends who talk, and I wish her nothing but the best and I hope it lasts. I am very happy for them. She's a great girl.

Why did you decide to go back to reality TV?
My father [Bruce Jenner] and I were getting to know each other off the camera at this stage in my life, and I wanted to reach out to him and hash out all the things people hash out, and it was right around the time when they started filming the show. [The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" producers] approached us and asked if we wanted to put it on camera and we obliged. I think it's good because if there's anybody else who watches the show and has been in our situation, I didn't mind putting it all out there to show people that it's OK to reach out, life is very short. They can see and get the courage to do the same.

Since you filmed those episodes, how has your relationship with your father changed?
Well we definitely talked about things that we normally wouldn't have, so we've learned a lot about each other, we're around each other more, it's just grown and it continues to grow every day. We understand each other more, we do more things together, he invites me to more places, more car shows, he invited me to play golf more, we opened up the lines of communication.

Are you going to be in any more episodes of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians"?
I'll film whenever they ask me to film. I enjoy filming and it's cool because I get to see that side of that family. We didn't see each other growing up, it was two separate homes. It's cool to be able to spend more time with them, so I love it. Any time they ask me I'm there.

Have you heard about MTV's plans to air an alternate ending to the series finale of "The Hills"?
I read something about that, but I don't know what's going on with that, can you fill me in? I've got no idea. I remember back when we filmed they said there was two different endings, but I didn't know which one they were going to go with so I don't really know if I remember what that other ending was. I'm curious, I'll have to actually watch that.

Have you seen Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's baby, North West?
I have never seen the baby. It's such a new thing, and Kim's got such a big family and a lot of friends, so I'm just waiting for the right moment. If she invites me over to see the baby then I'll gladly come over there and see her. I want to give her some time, she's probably on Cloud Nine right now, she's so happy, so I'm giving her space.

And what do you think of that name, North West?
I think it's cool. I actually knew it was that all along. Well I didn't know completely, but we had talked about it and she had mentioned that name and I said 'You know what, I like it!' I thought it was cool, it was unique.

You can watch "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" on E! on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.

What Do Critics Think Of 'Magna Carta'?

$
0
0

Jay-Z's bold marketing campaign for "Magna Carta Holy Grail" paved the way for a Fourth of July brimming with high-profile buzz, but critical reception to the album has been somewhat mixed.

The New York Times claims "Grail" is filled with "ups and downs," while The Los Angeles Times feels it's "full of empty boasts." USA Today, on the other hand, awarded the album a perfect four-star review. Take a look at some top reviews, and chime in with your own response to Jay-Z's 12th solo album.

Los Angeles Times: "Throughout 'MCHG,' beats jiggle with synthetic energy courtesy of the master of genre. Combined and at their best, as on 'BBC' and 'Heaven,' the producer and rapper move with the coordination of expert magicians juggling Champagne bottles and knives."

USA Today: "The breadth of his subject matter — which also touches on family, loyalty, spirituality and fame — is matched by his lyrical acuity. His perspective is that of someone who has achieved much but hasn't lost sight of what brought him to this point."

The New York Times: Often, Jay-Z’s boasts are contested by tracks with their own stubborn agendas: minor keys, empty spaces, unyielding arrangements that make his rhymes dodge and weave around them. ... Though Timbaland’s productions always hold some sly surprises, 'Magna Carta ... Holy Grail' comes across largely as a transitional album, as if Jay-Z has tired of pop but hasn’t found a reliable alternative."

Billboard: "As an event, it's good, it's great, it's disappointing and back again. As an album, though, it tends to be safe."

MTV: "With his verses Jay mulls over the pitfalls of his fame atop somber piano keys and a steady drum knock. That's not to suggest that Holy Grail is an over-intellectual affair. There is a ton of dual meaning packed behind each Jigga rap, but it works just as well with a surface listen."

The Guardian: "It's the least surprising opening to this album possible: Justin Timberlake getting his Authentic Blues Face on over a thinly sketched femme fatale while portentous piano plays."

New York Daily News: "Jay's long track record of hits may have emboldened him to go deep this time. Lyrically, it seems like he's trying to live up to a famous rap from 2003's 'The Black Album,' in which he admitted, 'If skills sold, truth be told/I'd probably be lyrically Talib Kweli.'"

The Independent: "The most notable moments include the aptly rude, garish trombone groove behind the new-money boast 'Somewhere In America,' where Jay-Z invites his appalled old-money neighbours to his housewarming party; and the sadly sinister horn motif underpinning 'FUTW,' in which he takes liberties characterising his mere success as emblematic of the emancipatory struggle: 'America tried to emasculate the greats/Murder Malcolm, gave Cassius the shakes.' But then again, as he acknowledges in 'Holy Grail,' the benefits of wealth far outweigh the irritations of being public property: 'We're all just entertainers/And we're stupid and contagious.'"

Stereogum: "Which is all to say, Jay-Z is still as lyrically rich of a rapper whose songs require close attention as he’s always been. Many of Magna Carta‘s tracks are lacking interesting production — especially when we’re all still fresh off 'Yeezus' and 'Run The Jewels' — save the unbelievably ebullient 'BBC,' a verse-trade-off with former adversary Nas that has Timbaland, Beyoncé, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell, and Justin Timberlake doing gang vocals(!!!!) on the hook. But what we expect and, frankly, want from Hov is for him to write couplets that we apply to our own lives."

Bling Ring Victim Finds Movie 'Upsetting'

Rachel Bilson, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom were among the stars victimized by The Bling Ring, a group of Los Angeles teenagers who robbed the houses of celebrities in 2008 and 2009. The group's exploits were chronicled in Sofia Coppola's recent film "The Bling Ring," but not everyone was pleased with Coppola's decision to depict the criminal events onscreen.

"I thought it was weird to glorify something that was so upsetting for a lot people," Bilson told the UK edition of Cosmopolitan in a new interview. Bilson lost thousands of dollars in jewelry and other items when Bling Ring members broke into her home. "It's important to detach from material things, but the special, personal things I lost are hard to forget," she said.

Of course, Coppola's film could have been even worse for Bilson. In real life, Bling Ring member Rachel Lee reportedly defecated in the actress's bathroom during one break-in; that scene is not shown in "The Bling Ring."

"We were in Rachel [Bilson's] bathroom and Rachel just had to go, so she just ... yeah. I remember the incident so well," fellow Bling Ringer Nick Prugo told Vanity Fair reporter Nancy Jo Sales (via NextMovie). "I can recall the smell, which is really nasty, disgusting."

Bilson wasn't the only Bling Ring victim to feel violated by the film. Hilton, who let Coppola use her house for certain scenes, said the film made her cry.

"I was really emotional watching it," Hilton told Vulture writer Kyle Buchanan back in May. "During some parts of it, I literally had tears in my eyes and I wanted to cry."

For more on Bilson, head over the the Cosmopolitan website.
