Kelly Osbourne: I'm Retiring the Word 'Tranny'... Will You Join Me?

0
0

Following her comments about a transgender friend in Glamour UK, Kelly came under fire from transgender advocates for her use of the slur "tranny," among others. Kelly soon got in touch with GLAAD expressing her desire to apologize to the transgender community, but also to share some of the information she herself had researched about anti-transgender bias, slurs, and the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

I'd first like to make it clear that no one asked me to write this. After reaching out to GLAAD for advice and clarification, I thought it was imperative to explain and amend my wrong. I gained a lot of knowledge, and I now feel the urgency to speak out and teach others. As unfortunate as this incident was, I assure you it was taken out of context, but I cannot deny the words; they did come out of my mouth.

As a lifelong LGBT ally and friend, I feel it is my duty to not only apologize for my wrong but to also correct it. The word "tr*nny" is a derogatory and hurtful word. I was completely ignorant to this and soon came to realize most of my peers and LGBT friends are, too. This is a word I will no longer use or allow. It wasn't until I googled it after speaking with GLAAD that I found out just how unbelievably offensive it was. When friends jokingly called me that in the past, I took it as a compliment or a joke, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

Transgender people are some of the bravest people on Earth and among the LGBT community. I cannot imagine the courage it takes to live your life openly and honestly, reflecting who you truly are, or the hurt that comes from having to hide who you are because others may not support and accept you. Due to the fact that it is Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20, I would like to raise awareness of this injustice in society. It is a day to remember those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence and speak out against the fact that transgender people face disproportionate amounts of discrimination and harassment every day. The lack of knowledge about transgender people contributes to the unparalleled number of violent acts against them every day.

A part of me is happy I've made such an awful mistake, because I can now use this as a platform to help speak out against the use of such hurtful and dehumanizing words. With your assistance and support, we can get this word out of television/media. It is still being used today; I've seen it four times in the past week.

My sincerest apologies to any ally or member of the LGBT community whom I have hurt or offended. That kind of representation goes against everything I stand for and is the last thing I would ever want to do. I would also like to thank The Transadvocate for educating me and bringing this to my attention. Nobody can tell you whom to love or what gender to be. That is your basic human right, and certainly nobody has the right to discriminate against you for who you truly are!

Terrible News For Courteney Cox & Friends

0
0

If you've noticed a curious preponderance of strange black goatees popping up on the Twitter photos of your friends and friendly television journalists, there's no need to be worried that you're missing a new (and awful) fashion trend; you should, however, be concerned about the state of television.

Earlier this week, NBC announced that it was shelving the cult hit "Community," from its mid-season schedule. But more on that in a moment; the news that another fan favorite, "Cougar Town," was being cut back on by ABC is another jolt to TV viewers that must be dealt with.

The Courteney Cox-starring sitcom suffered a blow when ABC announced on Friday that it is cutting the show's order down to 15 episodes from the customary 22. And while it was announced immediately afterward that it will return to TV at some undetermined point, The show's creator and runner, Bill Lawrence, was clearly not pleased. Which he made very clear on Twitter.

"No, Cougar Town isn't cancelled. Yes, I'm mad. We will see you soon, I'm sure (I know when/where but can't say). Might speak my mind..." he wrote, before doing just that. "Look, we will be back, and the show will be on for a long time (Parks and Rec style). Only people hurt by reduced order - crew and fans."

That was just the beginning.

"Will vent later. Must go edit episode that will be on in... sometime. Enjoy Celebrity Wife Swap on ABC. Your kids should watch," he continued, smacking the network for its reality programming. "All fans - thanks. Truly. My timeline is destroyed. Maybe I'll slide some episodes out early and we can see what you all think... uh-oh."

Yes, he knew exactly what he was doing with that one.

"That last tweet will get me a nice call from a Disney attorney," he continued. And then, after retweeting some harsh notes from fans, he hit out at one of ABC's other shows that did make the schedule.

"ahhh, I think we'll survive. Will have to self promote. Man, 'work it' is bleak, though. Will hurt my heart if it does well," he told a fan Saturday morning.

Personal passion in television -- a good time to revisit the "Community" debacle. The shelving was a cold splash of water on the faces of its small but rabid fan base, which soon turned its Tumblr-powered devotion into an action center dedicated to convincing the network to bring the series back. Blogs, petitions and other acts of solidarity -- including adding to their avatars the goatees that character Abed wore when he wanted to be "evil" -- sprung up post haste, all in hopes of reviving what is largely considered the smartest comedy on television.

The vague response from NBC was the promise that the show would come back at some time or another, but no date has been set. So for now, the Greendale Human Beings sleep in a fetal position, changing the channel in hopes of finding something else worth watching -- and it won't be "Cougar Town," which fans of the show became fond of after Abed began professing his love for the series in the super meta "Community" way.

All of this, of course, doesn't even touch on the loss of Regis Philbin, who, while the most mainstream TV figure of all time, also engendered sympathy after he left "Live!" after 28 years due to contractual issues.

The one silver lining is that "Arrested Development" will indeed be making its long awaited comeback, with new episodes coming in 2013. But the platform won't even be traditional television; while original episodes were carried by Fox, new adventures of the Bluth family will be streamed on Netflix, the web video rental service.

What this means for traditional network TV remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: they are not working to reach out to young fans, or at least those who congregate on the web and share a joy of niche comedy. Will it matter, or is Twitter just a beehive for criticism that has little sting in the outside world?

Will Neil Patrick Harris Be Horrible Again?

Joss Whedon is a busy guy. A writer/director/producer and cult god, the geek icon is shepherding to the big screen one of next year's most anticipated movies in the Marvel epic "The Avengers," as well as a "Much Ado About Nothing" adaptation he somehow managed to find time to direct in his down time. But, as geek icon and benevolent leader to a loyal internet following, Whedon has certain commitments that far exceed other Hollywood-centric auteurs, and right now, he has a pressing doctor's appointment he must keep.

In 2008, Whedon directed the tragic comedy musical web series, "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." Starring Neil Patrick Harris as the titular diabolical wimp, it also featured Whedon show veterans Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day in the story of nerdy evil vs. handsome heroics. A cult hit, it has, like everything else on the internet, generated rumors and buzz about a potential sequel, with Whedon and Harris hinting over the past few years that it will, indeed, happen at some point. But when?

Speaking to Yahoo! Movies about the Avengers, Whedon punctuated a conversation about the world's greatest superhero team with a quick update about the world's nerdiest villain.

"We have been working on that for a while. It's been hard, because we all have jobs, and some of them are extremely taxing," he said, no doubt alluding to his own film work, Harris's work on "How I Met Your Mother" and Fillion's work on "Castle." "But we have had a vision of the thing for a while, we have been working on it, we have a bunch of songs and a few scenes. We need a little free time and right now that's plenty hard to come by."

It's not the most concrete or promising of updates, but it's progress; in March of 2010, Harris seemed to have no idea what the future held for the series, beyond a potential hunch on its releasing platform.

"I don't know what their plans are, but I don't think it will be on the Internet," he told MTV. "I think it will probably be a film. Now we have to figure out everyone's schedules."

Kristin Cavallari Attends Marine Corps Ball

It looks like Justin Timberlake isn't the only celebrity to make good on a promise these days. "Dancing With the Stars" alum Kristin Cavallari made the night of one lucky Marine Thursday at a Marine Corps Ball in Temecula, Calif.

Cavallari accompanied Lance Cpl. Jonathan Burkett -- who invited her over Twitter in August -- to the formal event and wrote about her experience for Chinese Laundry's blog.

"My date for the night, Lance Cpl. Jonathan Burkett, thanked me for attending as his guest but really I'm the one giving thanks. John and all the Marines at our table were so welcoming and friendly. I had a really great time and it was an absolute honor to be amongst our county's finest while celebrating all they do for us," she wrote.

Cavallari, like Timberlake who attended a Marine Corps Ball last weekend, was moved by the experience she shared with the Marines.

"Looking around the room at all the proud, brave faces of the people that risk their lives for our country was something I'll never forget," she wrote. "I felt such pride in our country and for the people that sacrifice so much in order to keep us safe, including their families who are left waiting."

But Cavallari wasn't the only one who enjoyed the evening. Sources told TMZ that the reality star spent the night taking photos with fans and stayed for the entire event -- something that definitely didn't go unnoticed.

Boat Captain: I Didn't Hear Natalie Wood's Cries For Help

Many questions still remain in the case surrounding actress Natalie Wood's mysterious death, but one person who was on the boat is opening up about the night she went missing and drowned.

Dennis Davern, skipper of the yacht Splendour, recalls the night in 1981 when Wood, who was aboard the boat with her husband Robert Wagner and actor Christopher Walken, mysteriously fell overboard.

"No I didn't hear cries for help because I was on the bridge of the boat and I had music going," Davern told Entertainment Tonight, adding that had he been at water level, he might have been able to hear something.

According to Davern, Wagner shot down his suggestion to turn on a spotlight to search for Wood after she went missing, along with the idea to reach out to the restaurant where they dined earlier in the evening. It was hours later that the Coast Guard was notified about Wood, and a search the next morning led them to her body in the water.

"I've been trying to come forward for the last 20 years," Davern said about opening up about Wood's death. "But no one really listened. And now somebody is listening."

The L.A. County Police announced Thursday that the case of Wood's death has been re-opened due to credible information from a witness suggesting Wagner caused Wood's death.

However, the police have been clear that Wagner is not currently a suspect and that Wood's death is still considered an accident.

For more from Davern and about Wood's case, head over to Entertainment Tonight.

Woods' Sister: 'I Don't Think She Fell'

LOS ANGELES -- Natalie Wood's drowning death nearly 30 years ago came after a night of dinner, drinking and arguments but the question remains – was it anything more than a tragic accident?

Conflicting versions of what happened on the yacht shared by Wood, her actor-husband Robert Wagner and their friend, actor Christopher Walken, have contributed to the mystery of how the actress died on Thanksgiving weekend in 1981.

Two sheriff's detectives are now diving into the mysterious events on the yacht Splendour, although whether they reach any different conclusions than their predecessors remains to be seen. They recently received new, seemingly credible information and heard from potential witnesses who weren't included in the original investigation of Wood's death, sheriff's Lt. John Corina said Friday.

But he said nothing has happened to change the official view that Wood's death was originally an accidental drowning. Wagner, the star of "Hart to Hart" is not considered a suspect, he added.

Corina released few details about who investigators have contacted or plan to re-interview, but the inquiry will certainly lead them to speak with the three survivors of the trip – Wagner, Walken and skipper Dennis Davern.

Wood's sister, Lana, was not on the boat, but told CNN's Piers Morgan on Friday that she has spoken with Davern many times and believes her sister did not fall off the boat.

"I don't think she fell, I don't know if she was pushed, I don't know whether there was an altercation and it happened accidentally but she shouldn't have died and that does stay with me and hurt," Lana Wood said.

"I would prefer to always believe that RJ (Wagner) would never do anything to hurt Natalie and that he loved her dearly, which he did, and I don't believe that whatever went on was deliberate. I've always cared about him. I always will care about him," she said.

The captain said on NBC's "Today" on Friday that Wagner is to blame for the Oscar-nominated actress' death in the chilly waters of Southern California in November 1981, but didn't offer many specifics. For years he has maintained that he heard the famous couple arguing on the boat before Wood went missing and Wagner refusing to immediately search the waters nearby for his wife.

Davern's account is dramatically different from what he told investigators after Wood's body was found in 1981, when no mention of an argument between the couple was made. Wood was wearing a nightgown, wool socks and red down coat when she was found floating off Santa Catalina Island.

The renewed investigation comes at a time when plenty of attention was sure to be focused on Wood, whose beauty and acting in films such as "West Side Story" and "Rebel Without a Cause" made her Hollywood royalty. Her death stunned the world and CBS' "48 Hours Mystery" has been looking into the case for a special airing on Saturday.

Sheriff's officials denied the renewed attention prompted their review, which could take months.

"We're not concerned with the anniversary date," Corina said. "It may have jarred some other people's memories."

Davern and Wagner agree on one point about the fateful night – there was a heated argument on the yacht after the group returned from dinner on Catalina. All had been drinking, and here is where the three men's accounts begin to differ.

Davern said he heard Wagner and Wood arguing and its outcome had horrific consequences.

Was that fight "what ultimately led to her death?" Davern was asked by "Today" show host David Gregory.

"Yes," Davern replied.

"How so?"

"Like I said, that's going to be up to the investigators to decide," Davern responded after a long pause.

Wagner acknowledges a fight took place on the Splendour, but in his best-selling 2008 memoir "Pieces of My Heart," he wrote that the fighting was between him and Walken. The disagreement began over the acting profession and led to Wood retreating to her cabin, while the dispute raged on between Wagner and Walken. Later Walken went to bed, according to Wagner, who, after staying up with Davern for a while, went looking for his wife and couldn't find her on board. He then noticed that a dinghy attached to the boat _and his wife – was gone.

Walken, who has rarely spoken about the events that led to Wood's death, denied in a 1982 interview on "Good Morning America" that he and Wagner quarreled.

"No, that's not true," Walken said when asked if a fight was the reason Wood left the yacht. "They were very good to me, that family, and that's not true.

"We were having a Thanksgiving weekend, a good time," he said.

But Walken told sheriff's detectives that there was an argument, according to a 2000 Vanity Fair piece that included statements from a report by the investigating detective. It also included comments from Davern, who told the magazine that he heard Wagner and Wood fighting before she went missing.

The detective, Wagner and Walken and coroner's officials all have maintained that Wood's death was an accident, possibly caused by her trying to secure the dinghy to the side of the yacht.

"The people who are convinced that there was something more to it than what came out in the investigation will never be satisfied with the truth," Walken was quoted in the Vanity Fair piece as saying during an interview in the 1980s. "Because the truth is, there is nothing more to it. It was an accident."

Wagner too addressed the uncertainty about what happened in his book.

"Nobody knows," he wrote. "There are only two possibilities; either she was trying to get away from the argument, or she was trying to tie the dinghy. But the bottom line is that nobody knows exactly what happened."

Wagner said through a spokesman that his family trusts the sheriff's department to conduct a fair investigation into Wood's death.

The couple were married twice, first in 1957 before divorcing six years later. They remarried in 1972.

Justin Takes Paternity Test, Then Serenades Selena

It's stories like this that make you understand why Justin Bieber's fans are so jealous of Selena Gomez.

Fresh from taking a paternity test, the 17-year-old pop star serenaded his 19-year-old girlfriend during Saturday rehearsals for the American Music Awards, reports Us Weekly.

A source told the magazine, Bieber seemed to be in good spirits, at one point even singing a cover of James Brown's "I Feel Good." The couple was "totally adorable," according to the source who spotted Selena and her man snuggling between takes.

Bieber's good mood seems to show he's confident that the DNA he took on Friday, Nov. 18, will prove that he's not the father of Mariah Yeater's 3-month old son. Though the lawsuit was withdrawn by Yeater's legal team, Bieber is determined to put this mess behind him.

"He's ready to take a paternity test, at any moment," Bieber's manager Scooter Braun told "Extra" last week. "We've never even seen the lawsuit, but we're going to just get ahead of this thing and go right after it. I think it's important to hold people accountable for their actions."

Bieber added, "Just because she [made those accusations], we don't want it to seem like it's ok for everyone to just say, like, 'I had Justin's baby or having his baby.'"

At Sunday's AMA show Bieber performed the song "Mistletoe" from his new Christmas album and joined LMFAO for their finale number, donning bright yellow patterned skinny jeans.

Jon Hamm On His Ridiculous Kristen Wiig Sex Scene

0

Though she'd already been standing out on "Saturday Night Live" and supporting film roles for years, no one had a bigger breakout year than Kristen Wiig. After all, she co-wrote and starred in the highest earning female comedy of all time, "Bridesmaids," which many consider to be the funniest film of the year.

Yes, it was about women planning a wedding, but the movie made genders laugh in equal measure, making it less than a surprise that Wiig was named GQ's "Bro of the Year." And who better to write up the award's dedication than Jon Hamm? He's the ultimate man's man, and starred as Wiig's jerk hookup partner in "Bridesmaids," as well as her husband in "Friends With Kids," which should hit theaters in the coming months.

"For a lot of comics, there's a persona they're not comfortable revealing unless they're performing," Hamm writes. "Kristen is incredibly shy; she has her hoodie pulled up and her sleeves pulled over her hands. But this is a woman who wore coconuts on her tits on SNL; she can go to the craziest, most grotesque places on the planet in character."

Of course, one of those grotesque places -- along with the vomit extravaganza -- in "Bridesmaids" was Wiig's ridiculous opening sex scene with Hamm, who described the shoot thusly:

"Bounding around in a flesh-colored thong, trying not to sweat all over Kristen while a hundred crew members are literally like, 'Can we get this done, please?'--our embarrassment coupled with everyone else's exhaustion lent that scene a particularly awkward sensibility."

Awkward, but entirely worth it. At least for the audience.

Kermit Sings With 'Flight Of The Concords' Star

While "The Muppets" is all about reviving the spirit of the beloved Jim Henson franchise, it is also, on a behind-the-scenes level, bringing back together another quirky TV series.

During Kermit & Co.'s decade absence from singing and dancing on television, the New Zealand import "Flight of the Conchords" helped pick up the slack. A hipster hallucinogenic musical about two down and out musicians living on the lower east side of Manhattan (as well as the vast expanses of their imaginations), it only lasted two seasons, but two of its most important elements have joined up with the Jason Segel "Muppets" movie for ultimate musical happiness.

Along with James Bobin, who co-created the "Conchords" show for HBO, directing the film, Bret McKenzie, one half of the singing stars of the show, played a major part in creating its soundtrack. That includes its opening scene song, "Life's A Happy Song," which has largely become the theme for the film. A fun, bouncy tune that spouts optimism in every note, it's performed by Jason Segel and his Muppet pal Walter in the movie, with mass dance sequences as they traipse through their home of Smalltown, USA.

In a new feature about McKenzie in the NY Times, he talks trying to write music for the film, and the odd experience of trying to figure out which Muppets could, and which couldn't, sing.

On the yes list: bears, frogs and pigs. The no list: chickens, and other fowl.

"So I was like, 'Can we get the penguins to sing?'" McKenzie remembers about one song in particular that required an ensemble chorus. "And they'd say: 'No. Penguins don't sing.'"

Luckily, as noted, frogs can sing; Kermit, of course, is one of the Muppets' most famous vocalists. To celebrate his contribution, the NY Times had McKenzie sing his "Life's A Happy Song" with the head frog himself, creating a delightful duet you can see below.

So, uh, what's up with the sling, George?!
