Why Will Smith Turned Down 'Django'

$

Will Smith has accepted roles in all three "Men in Black" films, the over-the-top romantic comedy "Hitch," and the animated underwater feature "Shark Tale," but there is one recent Oscar-nominated film he turned down.

Smith was up for the lead part in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," EW reports, but decided against accepting the role.

“Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead," Smith said. "The other character was the lead!” The "other character" that Smith is referencing is bounty hunter King Schultz, played by Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the character. Waltz, it should be noted, won Best Supporting Actor at the 85th annual Academy Awards, a role that many felt was a lead.

“I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!’” Smith said, spoiling the film. As a result of Smith's passing, Jamie Foxx took on the role of Django.

Smith had originally claimed that he was passing on the part because of a scheduling conflict. The actor told Empire last summer, "I came really close, it was one of the most amazing screenplays I had ever ever seen. I was in the middle of 'Men In Black 3' and [Tarantino] was ready to go, and I just couldn't sit with him and get through the issues, so I didn't want to hold him up. That thing's going to be ridiculous. It is a genius screenplay."

“I thought it was brilliant,” Smith added. “Just not for me.”

NEW YORK — The Video Music Awards are taking a road trip to Brooklyn.

MTV's showcase awards show is traditionally held in Los Angeles or Manhattan.

This year the show will be held Aug. 25 at the new Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets and the site of recent Rolling Stones and Jay-Z multi-night concerts.

MTV will celebrate 30 years of the VMAs this year. From Kanye West and Taylor Swift to the Madonna-Britney Spears-Christina Aguilera kiss, the show has become known more for its pop culture moments than the winners of its signature Moonman trophies.

The VMAs were last held in New York in 2009 and have been in Los Angeles since.

Twitter Loves Tilda At MoMA

Tilda Swinton slept in a box at the Museum of Modern Art in New York this weekend and the Internet was atwitter with speculation.

The Oscar winning actress napped the day away in a transparent box with only cushions and a jug of water near her. At first there was some confusion, as evidenced by the Tumblr account "Is Tilda Swinton Sleeping In A Box?" but the Internet soon came to an understanding. (Yes, it was true.)

The living art piece, titled "The Maybe," is a revival of a 1995 collaboration with the artist Cornelia Parker at the Serpentine Gallery in London. In the updated piece, Swinton will be taking naps at unannounced times throughout MoMA's 2013 season.

For those who don't get the significance of the project, the museum statement proclaimed: "Those who find it chance upon it for themselves, live and in real — shared — time: now we see it, now we don't."

Not surprisingly this bizarre art happening sparked a recent Twitter frenzy, full of both praise and flak for the talented Bowie doppelgänger. We scoured the Twitterverse and made it back alive, with the best 140 character commentaries on Tilda's MoMA debut.

Elisabeth Moss Opens Up About Marriage

"Mad Men" actress Elisabeth Moss doesn't mince words when it comes to discussing her 8-month marriage to "Saturday Night Live" funnyman Fred Armisen.

A year after saying that the "greatest impersonation [Armisen] does is that of a normal person," the 30-year-old actress gave more insight into what she learned from her marriage to the comedian in an interview with The New York Times.

"Oh, God. I learned so much," Moss told the Times in early March. "Not to be at all Oprah on you, but it is one of those things where you are kind of glad to have learned those lessons at an early age -- to get them out of the way."

Moss and Armisen married in October 2009 and split in May 2010. Less than a week after their split, Armisen was reportedly dating SNL co-star Abby Elliott. His relationship with Elliott ended in September 2011. Moss has recently been linked to Australian cinematographer Adam Arkapaw.

In January 2013, Armisen admitted to Howard Stern that he was a "terrible husband" to Moss.

"I want it all ... fast," he told Stern. "I want to be married, I want to live together ... and then somewhere around a year or two years, I get freaked out. I freak out emotionally and then I actually feel like 'Oh my God, who's this stranger in my house?'"

But they aren't the first celebrity exes to dish about their relationship after a split. Click through the slideshow below to read more shocking statements celebs have made post-divorce:

What Critics Are Saying About The Strokes

$

-- The Strokes, "Comedown Machine" (RCA)

The Strokes spent the past six years burning through all the leeway earned with once being declared saviors of rock `n' roll. The synth-heavy "Comedown Machine" is hardly a letdown of last-straw proportions. It also wasn't made to woo anyone back.

But maybe what The Strokes want is a clean break. No tour supporting this fifth studio record is on the table. And lyrics like "Decide my past/Define my life" over the New Wave bleeps in "Tap Out" feel freighted with a band sick of being forever graded against their 2001 breakout "Is This It."

That might be a fair grievance. But also in bounds is the fact that "One Way Trigger" is a ringer for A-ha. By the time frontman Julian Casablancas is finally ripping through an angry and satisfying chorus in the rocker "50/50," interest in which way this decent but disjointed album lands has already faded.

MADISON, Wis. — Actor James Cromwell has pleaded no contest to disrupting a University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents meeting last month while protesting cat experiments at the school.

The 73-year-old Cromwell and another activist, 27-year-old Jeremy Beckham, were charged with disorderly conduct following the meeting on the UW-Madison campus Feb. 7.

Both men held large signs showing a cat with metal implanted in its head at a campus lab while shouting about the treatment of cats.

Cromwell's attorney, Marcus Jens Berghahn, entered no contest pleas on both men's behalf Monday. A court commissioner ordered each to pay $263 in forfeitures and costs.

Cromwell was nominated for an Academy Award for the 1995 film "Babe." His film credits also include "L.A. Confidential" and "The Green Mile."

It is not a family business, at least for these Latino stars...

Culturally, Hispanics tend to follow in the steps of their parents, passing along their traditional family business or professions generation after generation. However, far from continuing the same practice, celebrities like Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez and Antonio Banderas, decided to turn their lives in a completely different direction.

Contrary to other stars, whom's parent’s professions are linked in some way to the entertainment world, these artists have come far, most of them from humble foundations, and reached the top.

Daughters and sons of cigar rollers and farmers, accountants and teachers, you would never guess where these stars originally come from. Take a look at the gallery above and tell us which one is your favorite story.

'Five Easy Pieces' Actress Turns To Crowdfunding To Pay For Cancer Treatment

Actress Karen Black has turned to online crowd-funding in an effort to pay for cancer treatment, reports Deadline Hollywood.

The 73-year-old, who starred alongside Jack Nicholson in "Easy Rider," was diagnosed with ampullary cancer in November 2010. After undergoing an operation to remove a third of her pancreas, followed by chemo and radiation therapy, the actress was thought to have beaten the disease in July 2011. But sadly, just a few months later, the cancer returned and it has now spread to her lungs and lower back.

Now, Black is looking to raise $17,000 so she'll be able to enroll in an experimental treatment in Europe. Black's fundraising campaign was launched on March 14, and she's already raised close to $14,000.

Black's husband Stephen Eckelberry explains on the Gofundme page that the campaign is necessary, despite Black's successful career as an actress:

"So here is the big question; why would someone like Karen need money," Eckelberry acknowledged, and explained:

"Yes, she was an actress in movies, but most of the high-paying work dwindled out many years ago. She has a modest pension and medical insurance (thank goodness), but as anyone knows who has fought cancer, that is not enough. In the last two years we have used up all of our savings keeping Karen alive – traveling – treatments, getting people to help her. We have nothing left. And the European treatment is not covered by insurance."

According to Eckelberry, Black had been battling cancer privately as she was hoping she would be cured and would be able to call herself a survivor, but decided to come forward with the public campaign as it could be her last hope at beating the disease.

Eckelberry wrote that he wasn't able to go into detail about the treatment his wife is seeking in Europe, but "we have to move fast, Karen needs to go in the next few weeks, otherwise she might be to weak to go at all."

Lulu: Five Lessons to Be Learned From Ageing in the Spotlight

$
0
0

There's no arguing that getting older isn't always easy... But along with the rigours of ageing common to all of us, people ageing in the spotlight tend to face a higher degree of attention, scrutiny and criticism. Today at 64, I firmly believe that I am ageing victoriously, in large part due to the positive examples set by those who are ageing in the spotlight. These are five lessons I think we can all benefit from:

1) It is Possible to Get Better with Age: On the surface it's easy to think that this expression applies only to men, as they seem to become only more handsome and distinguished as they age. For women, getting better with age is often about "figuring everything out". The prime example of the "figured it out phenomenon" that I look to is Jennifer Lopez. Ms Lopez, still quite a young woman, has improved in countless ways as she has gotten older. Her fashion choices have improved. Her hair and makeup are now always flawless. She has put it all together, which to me is an attribute of experience and wisdom. As time goes by, if we're lucky, we find the perfect hair colour, the best makeup and clothes that enhance our shapes. I swear that the best thing I ever did for my appearance was to ditch the red hair I had since I was fifteen and go back to the blonde hair I had as a young child. I look back at pictures of myself in my forties, and because I wanted to hang on to that 'signature' color, I looked older than I do now. Sometimes we need to break out of ruts and go outside our comfort zone. Sometimes we need to learn from those around us, but however we get there, figuring it all out can hold the keys to getting better with age.

2) Don't Underestimate the Power of Reinvention: Twenty years ago, who would have imagined that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be governor of California or that Madonna would author children's books? They themselves probably couldn't have even pictured it. But when we venture into unfamiliar territory, it's hard for our batteries not to be recharged. It's inspiring! After a lifetime as a singer, I never dreamed that I'd be involved in a skin care brand. But, Gail Federici (co-founder and former CEO of John Frieda Professional Hair Care/current CEO, Federici Brands) helped me reinvent myself in a completely new role. After launching Time Bomb anti-ageing skin care five years ago on QVC in the UK, Time Bomb will debut on QVC in the US on 28 March. The whole experience has given my life a new layer of meaning and purpose, which I feel helps keep me young.

3) It's All About Attitude: Attitude goes a long way as we age. A lot of people think of age as a detriment or use it as an excuse for slowing down. But others, like Betty White, have the attitude that age is just a matter of fact and simply go on living despite advanced age. At 89 she wrote a book, started acting on a new TV show and essentially just kept right on working like she always has. On ageing she says, "So many of us start dreading age when we're in high school. That's really a waste of a lovely life". That is a brilliant perspective. People tag people getting older as 'declining', but there are plenty of people who rail against that term. Betty White's attitude embodies the importance of laughter in the ageing process. When asked how she stays fit she answered, "I have a two-storey house and a bad memory so I'm always forgetting something and having to walk up and down the stairs. It's good exercise." Those who enjoy such longevity really have a lot of time to develop such wisdom, which is why we can learn so much from them. It's all about looking at the facts of life with humor and not taking ourselves too seriously, but also not giving in to the notion that we're "too old" to do things. At 86 Emmanuelle Riva recently starred in "Amour" and became the oldest actress ever nominated for an Oscar. For me, although it hasn't always been easy, I have enjoyed getting older. But much of that has to do with enriching my life with new experiences, staying current and keeping active. If your attitude allows you to approach life with the same energy and curiosity that you had in your teens and twenties, then your age will be nothing but a number.

4) A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss: It's a basic principle of physics that a body in motion tends to stay in motion. Tina Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Bette Midler are exemplary women who never stop moving (both literally and figuratively). They embody a youthful spirit because they don't slow down. When we having young children, jobs and busy lives, we tend to think fondly about days when our calendars will be empty. But as we age, it's more important than ever to keep our calendars filled. For me, keeping my days filled, taking care of my grandchildren for the day, rehearsing for gigs, etc may be exhausting, but helps me stay young. Sure I may have to push myself harder, but it's a lot more satisfying now, at this stage in my life.

5) How You Look Impacts How You Feel: Putting effort into our appearance definitely correlates to how we feel. Taking the time to get dressed and do our hair and makeup is a reminder to ourselves - and a message to others - that we care! The pride that we take in our appearance when we're young shouldn't disappear as we get older. It's not about going to extreme lengths, but just enough so that when you look in the mirror before you go out, you smile. Helen Mirren, Goldie Hawn, Sophia Loren and Jane Fonda, all women who seem to be defying the ageing process, are great examples of how a little bit of effort goes a long way. And it's not about impressing others, but it's true that when you look good, you feel good!

WATCH: Can Hollywood Give Up The Gay Joke?

Acclaimed filmmaker Ira Sachs sounded off on HuffPost Live on mainstream Hollywood's depiction of the gay characters.

Sachs, who is openly gay, joined fellow filmmaker Rose Troche and Gawker's Rich Juzwiak in the conversation, which touched on the type of popular films which primarily feature openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) characters in sideline roles, often for comic effect.

"From my perspective as an artist, a lot of what we have to do as individuals is actually create counter-cultural images," Sachs said. "It's always traditionally been a fight to do that."

He went on to note, "I want both to be embraced for my creating something that there's an absence of, but I also recognize that I have to fight as an individual to create that because everything is resisting it."

Omarosa Suing La Toya Jackson Over Cruel 'Apprentice' Comments

La Toya Jackson may soon regret messing with Omarosa on "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice."

Two weeks ago, the hot-headed ladies got into an argument on Donald Trump's NBC reality show in which Jackson alleged that Omarosa "probably pulled the plug" on her late fiance Michael Clarke Duncan. Now, Omarosa told "The Howard Stern Show" that she would be suing Jackson.

"I'm going to [sue her]," Omarosa said, before rehashing Jackson's cruel comments.

Stern was dubious about the lawsuit's merit. "I don't think it's actionable," he told her.

"It is only actionable if she repeats it. It's called a reckless disregard for the truth. So she said it back in October when she first taped the show. She's repeated it subsequently on all of these talk shows," Omarosa said, before clarifying that she would be suing for emotional distress. Omarosa went on to say that Jackson's attorney wrote her a letter blaming the comments on the show's producers.

"We gave her the time to retract it, and now we'll both be spending money on lawyers," Omarosa concluded.

"All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

"Pretty Little Liars" is getting a spinoffand a fifth season!

In addition to the show's renewal, ABC Family announced the launch of "Ravenswood," a spinoff of "Pretty Little Liars" that will debut in October after the teen smash hit's annual Halloween episode.

"Ravenswood" -- which comes from "Pretty Little Liars" executive producers I. Marlene King, Oliver Goldstick, Joseph Dougherty and Leslie Morgenstein -- will center on a town near "PLL's" Rosewood, Pennsylvania. Ravenswood "has suffered under a deadly curse for generations" and the spinoff will follow "five strangers who suddenly find themselves connected by this fatal curse and need to dig into the town's mysterious and terrible history before it's too late for each of them."

The "Pretty Little Liars" Halloween special is expected to introduce some of the "Ravenswood" characters.

"'Pretty Little Liars' is brand-defining and demo-defining for ABC Family. We are proud to be able to grow the 'PLL' franchise in two ways -- both by adding additional seasons of the original and by extending the storytelling into a spinoff. 'Ravenswood' will become another 'must-tweet-TV' series for us," ABC Family President Michael Riley said in a statement. "Our viewers have an incredible ability to amplify messages and create buzz around things that interest them, including our shows and talent."

The Season 3 finale of "Pretty Little Liars," which is based on a book series of the same name by Sara Shepard, was the No. 1 telecast for the 11th consecutive week amongst females 12-34 with 1.76 million total viewers and a 3.8 rating.

'Friday Night Lights' Getting A Kickstarter?

A "Friday Night Lights" movie could be heading to Kickstarter.

Former series star Adrienne Palicki spilled the beans to Screenrant about the potential route the much-discussed movie could be taking.

"I think they’re starting the Kickstarter, which is insane ... I have multiple feelings on it. I love it so much and I’m afraid that a movie might ruin it and I don’t want that to happen," Palicki said.

"Friday Night Lights" ended its TV run in 2010 after five seasons on NBC/DirecTV and talk of a movie followup quickly began in July 2011. Since then, there's been little progress -- besides several of the stars discussing it -- but with the success the "Veronica Mars" movie had via Kickstarter, several creators of cult-hit shows have been exploring that option to revive their fan favorite creations.

"I think that cult hits is exactly what our model works for," "Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas told The Huffington Post about other show revivals via Kickstarter. "I think an 'Arrested Development' movie could've been done this way without a doubt. I think we're the perfect example of this. I don't think it would work nearly as well with a new product, with something that didn't have a brand identity, something that didn't have built-in fans."
