Jackie Chan At Center Of China-Hong Kong Tensions

$

Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan this week joins China's top political advisory body in a move analysts say highlights Beijing's growing "soft power" efforts to project unity between itself and the former British colony.

But the 58-year-old actor, famous in the West for "Rush Hour" and "Police Story", faces a backlash in his hometown where the mainland is viewed with increasing suspicion.

According to professor Sonny Ho, co-director at the Centre for Greater China Studies, Chan was selected to appear at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) because his stardom could help promote ties.

"Jackie Chan is acting under the soft power and united front of the PRC (mainland) government," he said. The "united front" strategy, he said, was a campaign to promote a strong and peaceful homeland, unified with Taiwan.

China's growing clout over the past decade has seen actors from Hong Kong and Macau drafted into patriotic movies that glorify the country's past, from the mighty Han Dynasty to the early Communist Party era, Ho added.

The appointment of the martial arts star however was met with derision online in Hong Kong where Chan's reputation has taken a nosedive in recent years over his pro-Beijing stances such as calling for limits on the right to protest.

Dissatisfaction towards Beijing has risen in recent years over a range of issues from alleged political interference to an influx of mainlanders blamed for driving up property prices and for shortages of baby formula.

The announcement of Chan's appointment was greeted with online derision.

"Yet another movie star turns into a CPPCC member. Since when did this negative social trend become so popular?" one user posted on the Sina Weibo microblog site.

"Sure, add another big dope to a veritable congregation of big dopes," 'ianson' commented on the website of the South China Morning Post newspaper.

The CPPCC is a 2,000-strong advisory body which includes China's other token political parties and a few celebrities, including former NBA basketball star Yao Ming.

The conference, which convenes on Sunday, functions as a high-profile organisation but it is more toothless than China's essentially rubber-stamp legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), which opens its annual session on Tuesday.

However the NPC, with nearly 3,000 delegates, has a higher profile this year as it will confirm the completion of China's once-a-decade power transfer. At the meeting, new Communist Party boss Xi Jinping will be installed as Chinese president, taking over from Hu Jintao.

Chan, who is known for his martial arts skills and daring comedic stunt work, provoked a furious fight-back last December after reportedly suggesting in a Chinese magazine interview that protests in his native city should be restricted.

And in 2009, he landed in hot water for telling a forum that "we Chinese need to be controlled".

Pro-democracy Hong Kong lawmaker Emily Lau said his appointment was more evidence that Beijing was not prepared to take the city's concerns seriously.

"Maybe he represents a certain segment of the population but he has also upset quite a number of people. So if Beijing decides to appoint him, it shows you what kind of views they want to listen to, which is quite unfortunate."

But while increasing numbers of entertainers have allowed themselves to be co-opted by Beijing, Lau was not hopeful many would be willing to voice dissent.

"The last time Hong Kong artists came together was on June 4, 1989 (after the Tiananmen Square crackdown on pro-democracy protests)," she said.

"Now, many of them are very frightened of upsetting Beijing. The mainland is also now the biggest market so they cannot afford to let go of those commercial opportunities."

Naya Rivera's Santana is notorious for her stellar sing skills and dance moves on "Glee," but she's also a hot New Directions name because she's one of the series' openly gay characters.

While chatting with Craig Ferguson on "The Late Late Show" on Friday night (above), Rivera revealed that she has a strong lesbian fan base.

"I have a lot of lovely ladies who love me, so I'm pretty excited about that," she told Ferguson.

Although Santana parted ways with her long-term girlfriend Brittany (Heather Morris) at the end of Season 3, Rivera told THR that she has high hopes for them in the long run.

"Long-term? My fingers are crossed for [Brittany and Santana]," she said.

"Glee" returns on Thurs., March 7 at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.

Does Charlize Theron Want More Kids?

Charlize Theron is content with being a single mom-of-one, but sometimes she thinks about adding to her tiny brood.

The actress, who adopted son Jackson last year, admits she's considering having more kids -- under one condition.

"More?" she questioned as E! News asked the "Mad Max: Fury Road" star if she was interested in expanding her family. "I don't know. I mean, if all my kids could be like Jackson, I'd have 10 more right now."

If it were up to Theron's mom Gerda, her daughter would already be pregnant and/or starting the adoption process.

"I'd love her to have more," Gerda chimed in while Theron laughed and added, "She's always asking me when."

One thing is for certain though -- Theron's short hair is staying.

"It's so low maintenance," she said, "and having a kid, you need as much time as you can get."

Cuomo Reportedly Changes Course On Fracking After RFK Jr. Calls

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo came as close as he ever has to approving fracking last month, laying out a limited drilling plan for as many as 40 gas wells before changing course to await the findings of a new study after discussions with environmentalist and former brother-in-law Robert F. Kennedy Jr., several people familiar with his thinking told The Associated Press.

The turning point, which could delay a decision for up to a year or longer, came in a series of phone calls with Kennedy. The two discussed a new health study on the hydraulic fracturing drilling method that could be thorough enough to trump all others in a debate that has split New York for five years.

"I think the issue suddenly got simple for him," Kennedy told the AP, then went on to paraphrase Cuomo in their discussions: "'If it's causing health problems, I really don't want it in New York state. And if it's not causing health problems, we should figure out a way we can do it.'"

Kennedy and two other people close to Cuomo, who spoke to the AP only on condition of anonymity because Cuomo is carefully guarding his discussions on the issue, confirmed the outlines of the plan the governor was considering to allow 10 to 40 test wells in economically depressed southern New York towns that want drilling and the jobs it promises. The plan would allow the wells to operate under intense monitoring by the state to see if fracking should continue or expand.

They all said it was the closest Cuomo has come in his two years in office to making a decision on whether to green-light drilling.

The state has had a moratorium on the process since 2008 while other states in the gas-rich Marcellus Shale formation, such as Pennsylvania, have seen local economies boom as drilling rigs have sprouted up.

Cuomo issued a brief statement Saturday through a spokesman saying that the state departments of environmental conservation and health are "in the process of making a determination with respect to the safety and health impacts of fracking.

"After, and only after, they conclude their work will the state's position be determined — it's that simple and it hasn't and doesn't change with any conversations," Cuomo spokesman Josh Vlasto said.

The governor continues to refuse to talk about his internal process and wouldn't comment directly for this story. He has been repeating the phrase he's used for two years, that "science, not politics" will rule.

Kennedy, brother of Cuomo's ex-wife, Kerry, described a governor who is intensely involved in the emotion-charged issue, which Cuomo privately likened to taking on the National Rifle Association over gun control laws. Kennedy said Cuomo reached out personally to many others as well in his evaluation.

Kennedy believes Cuomo held off in large part because of the prospect of a new $1 million study by the Geisinger Health System of Pennsylvania, billed by property owners seeking safe fracking and environmentalists as a "large-scale, scientifically rigorous assessment" of drilling in Pennsylvania.

The study will look at detailed health histories of hundreds of thousands of patients who live near wells and other facilities that are producing natural gas from the same Marcellus Shale formation that New York would tap.

Unlike most studies funded by advocates or opponents of hydrofracking, this study would be funded by the Sunbury, Pa.-based Degenstein Foundation, which is not seen as having an ideological bent.

"I think it will be pivotal," Kennedy said. Preliminary results are expected within the year, but there is no specific timetable and final results could be years off. Kennedy is opposed to fracking unless it can be proven to be safe for the environment and public. He said he's unsure what the Geisinger report will conclude.

The research and education arm of the Independent Petroleum Association of America cried foul at the private conversations of the powerful public figures.

"This is pretty outrageous, above and beyond the four-year charade that's already occurred," said Steve Everley of Energy in Depth. "The governor has insisted publicly that his review of hydraulic fracturing will be based on science, and yet he's actually making decisions about New York's future based on backroom conversations with a Kennedy.

"Maybe if Governor Cuomo had been as interested in speaking with other regulators as he was in speaking with his former brother-in-law, he would have recognized that shale development can be and is being done safely, and folks struggling to find work upstate might actually have jobs," Everley said.

Dan Fitzsimmons, leader of the Joint Landowners Coalition of New York, a pro-drilling group, said opposition to hydrofracking is based on politics, not science.

"Delay, delay delay, that's been the name of the game with these folks, and the sad thing about Cuomo is that he's allowing it," Fitzsimmons said. "How long are you going to throw away taxpayer dollars over politics?"

But Adrian Kuzminski, a fracking opponent with the group Sustainable Otsego, said he fears that the test wells Cuomo has been considering would be "a stalking horse" for more drilling.

"After a couple of years they're going to say 'Oh, we don't see any problems,'" Kuzminski said. "There's no need for test wells in New York state. The information is just out there."

Shortly after the conversations with Kennedy in early February, Cuomo's health commissioner, Dr. Nirav Shah, mentioned the Geisinger study among three health reviews still pending and which could enter into Cuomo's decision. Shah, a nationally respected public health figure, was an associate investigator at the Geisinger Center for Health Research before going to work for Cuomo.

Sandra Steingraber, a biologist and founder of New Yorkers Against Fracking, said Saturday, "As Health Commissioner Shah said, the right time to study fracking is before fracking begins. We expect that Governor Cuomo will listen to scientists and medical experts and let evidence dictate whether or not to lift our state's moratorium, and we further expect that he will wait for national studies and a real New York-specific study."

Cuomo, a popular Democrat who supporters say may run for president in 2016, is getting criticism from both sides over his delayed decision and calls for more studies. Landowners and industry say they're missing out on an economic boom while environmentalists say the administration should have ordered a full health study and has been too opaque about the regulatory process.

Some pundits have questioned whether Cuomo was "becoming Hamlet on the Shale," echoing a reference to criticism of his father, former Gov. Mario Cuomo, who spent politically damaging months as "Hamlet on the Hudson" publicly debating whether to run for president. It's a characterization Kennedy rejects.

Many federal and state regulators say hydraulic fracturing, which injects a mix of water and chemicals thousands of feet underground to crack open shale and release natural gas, is safe when done properly and thousands of sites have few complaints of pollution. But environmental groups and some doctors say regulations still aren't stringent enough and the practice can pollute ground water. The Marcellus Shale lies under parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

"What's interesting is Andrew is trying to figure this out," Kennedy said. "It's interesting to see this ... that usually doesn't happen. (Most governors) take a poll, or they take industry money and just do it ... but I think this is the harder route."

Fallon Replacing Leno?

$

0

Maybe Jay Leno isn't the Freddy Krueger of late night after all. If The Hollywood Reporter's sources are correct, his reign of 11:35 pm terror may finally be coming to a close... for good... for real this time.

THR is reporting that, according to "two high-level industry sources", NBC will announce in May that Jimmy Fallon is replacing Leno in 2014. While the network still denies the rumor -- the possible change was first reported last December -- the sources explained the rationale is in part the result of stiffer competition for a younger audience.

Sources believe the network will bring in Fallon partly out of concern about the competition on ABC, which moved younger-skewing Jimmy Kimmel to the 11:35 time slot in January.... Leno's 'Tonight' still performs well for NBC, regularly besting his late-night rivals. But Kimmel is competitive in the 18-49 demo.

With NBC falling to an unprecedented fifth place, the network is likely to put all options on the table. Moving Fallon to the coveted spot may allow NBC to fight demographic fire with fire. Both Fallon and Kimmel have found ways to give their shows life beyond their time slot by creating segments that seem custom-made for internet sharing. Kimmel's show got a boost from the one-two punch of "F*cking Matt Damon" and "F*cking Ben Affleck", while Fallon has spun viral gold with things like Neil Young singing "Pants On The Ground" and memorable guest segments like the recent "Evolution Of Mom Dancing" with Michelle Obama.

Of course, the news begs several questions. First and foremost, "Is this for real?" Second, will Fallon move production to Los Angeles or stay in New York? Third, and perhaps most importantly, if Fallon goes to "The Tonight Show", who takes over the "Late Night" slot?

If you're betting, we'd say put your money somewhere in Tina Fey's general vicinity. After all, she signed a four-year contract with NBC late last year.

"Late Night With Tina & Amy"? Works for us.

What would Oscar night be without some surprises? This year, the big trend was the updo: all our bests this week, including Kate Beckinsale and Kate Bosworth, swept their hair off their shoulders, allowing their emotive eyes and megawatt smiles to hog the spotlight.

As for the worsts, we saw struggles with color, be they Nicki Minaj's dire need to dye her roots, or Scary Spice's mismatched lip. The busiest night in showbiz, we learned, is not the night to take risks.

Which look would you copy to accept an award? Which would you never wear on camera?

Mike Ryan: 'SNL' Scorecard: Kevin Hart Did What He Could

$
0
0

kevin hart snl

Kevin Hart's effort as host of "SNL" was fine. Actually, everything about last night's show was ... fine, I guess. It was kind of the definition of mediocre, actually. Put it this way: If the most memorable thing about the show was the fact that the host said "goddammit" twice, well, that's not a great sign. Don't get me wrong, Hart came with a ton of energy (perhaps too much at times), but the material was mostly second rate. It certainly wasn't a terrible show, but it wasn't a good or particularly memorable show, either. Off we go to a still slightly bored Scorecard ...

Sketch of the Night

"Z Shirt" (Tim Robinson, Kevin Hart) I was sold on this sketch even before the surprising reprise during the funeral. "Z Shirt" is pretty much the essence of every nightmare "hip" commercial that seemed to gain popularity during the early 1990s. The way Hart would frantically yell, "Is it a B shirt?," while looking up into a camera nails the horrors of my teenage years perfectly. And the reprise during the funeral was great, but I was kind of hoping we'd watch Hart scream his way through the entire alphabet. (I will have "Is it a H shirt?" in my head for the rest of the day.)

Score: 8.2

The Good

"The Walking Dead" (Taran Killam, Bill Hader, Nasim Pedrad, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan) Seriously, how was this not the first sketch after the monologue? Not only is "The Walking Dead" more relevant than Steve Harvey's show, it also showed off the host's ability to do physical comedy. Yes, Nasim Pedrad played a child again, but, boy, she plays a good Carl. And I think my favorite line was almost tacked on at the end, "Can we discuss the fact that Maggie just died?"

Score: 7.8

"Weekend Update" (Seth Meyers, Bobby Moynihan, Jay Pharoah, Kevin Hart) Even though Kevin Hart flubbed a line during "Really?!? With Seth and Kevin," that segment is so much better when Meyers has a partner. Also, Moynihan's Kim Jong-un is solid and hopefully we see more of that character in the future. (Actually, it would be great to see Moynihan and Pharoah team up more often.)

Score: 7.0

"360 News" (Kevin Hart, Tim Robinson, Bobby Moynihan, Nasim Pedrad, Kenan Thompson, Taran Killam, Jay Pharoah) A news anchor who uses multiple cameras so he can dramatically turn and look at each one runs into problems after a serious neck injury. I laughed, for no other reason than Hart sells it with each anguished turn of his head.

Score: 6.7

"Kevin Hart Monologue" (Kevin Hart) First, this is the second week in a row that we have had a person who is obviously not Don Pardo trying to sound like Don Pardo announcing the cast. (Darrell Hammond has subbed in for Pardo in the past.) Anyway, let's hope that the 95-year-old announcer is OK. As for Hart, like most comedians, he just did part of his standup set -- which was, again, fine. Perhaps it was nerves, but for the first couple of minutes, he seemed to be rushing through. Regardless, he has a point, "Training Day, bitch" really should have been a line in "Training Day."

Score: 6.5

The Bad

"New Pope" (Jason Sudeikis, Cecily Strong, Kevin Hart, Kenan Thompson, Bobby Moynihan, Fred Armisen, Taran Killam, Bill Hader) This particular sketch is a good example of the whole show being mediocre. So, the new pope is Quvenzhané Wallis. Hey, that's kind of funny! But, then, other than some mugging for the camera, the sketch went nowhere.

Score: 5.5

"Recording Session" (Kevin Hart, Vanessa Bayer, Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Nasim Pedrad) Another example of a good idea with not that much of a payoff. I think what hurt it is that while Vanessa Bayer's voice was funny, it wasn't so overwhelmingly good, compared to Hart's "bad" voice, that perhaps something was lost in the comparison.

Score: 5.0

"Cold Open: Sequester" (Jay Pharoah, Bill Hader, Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, Jason Sudeikis, Bobby Moynihan, Aidy Bryant, Taran Killam, Tim Robinson, Kenan Thompson, Fred Armisen) And here was our chance for an entire sketch filled with combined "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" Jedi mind-meld type references. Alas. Then again, perhaps that would have been kind of lame? Then again, instead, we got a Village People reference, for some reason. (The horse meat joke was about the only one that really stuck.)

Score: 5.0

"Steve Harvey" (Kenan Thompson, Kevin Hart, Nasim Pedrad) This felt about as long an as an actual episode of "The Steve Harvey Show." Also, there was a horse involved for some reason. Anyway, this sketch went absolutely nowhere and it took its sweet time doing so.

Score: 4.5

"Shark Tank" (Jaosn Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon, Tim Robinson) This went nowhere (I know, I keep writing that this week). The punchline was a lamp with glasses on it -- I'm not sure there's much else to say. I will add that there were some decent production values involved, which seems kind of off for such a throwaway sketch.

Score: 3.0

The Ugly

"Barnes & Noble Firing" (Bobby Moynihan, Cecily Strong, Kevin Hart, Ensemble) This is pretty much the same sketch as "McDonald's Firing" that we saw during the Anne Hathaway-hosted show. I guess what bothers me is that -- as opposed to most recurring sketches that at least put the characters in different situations -- it really is just the exact same "yelling with accents" sketch only with different uniforms. (For the record, I didn't like the first version, either.)

Score: 1.0

(Note: "Starbucks Verismo" aired in a prior episode and is not included in this Scorecard.)

Average Score for this Show: 5.47

Former "Wings" star Steven Weber and wife Juliette Hohnen have called it quits after 17 years of marriage.

TMZ reports that Hohnen, interior decorator and former on-air reporter for MTV, filed the divorce documents in Los Angeles County Superior Court in early February, citing "irreconcilable differences." According to the court documents, the couple had been separated since October 2012.

The two married on July 9, 1995, welcomed their first child, Jack Alexander, in 2001, and later welcomed Alfie James in 2003. According to TMZ, Hohnen is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their sons, as well as spousal support.

This will be divorce No. 2 for Weber, who ended a nine-year marriage to actress Finn Carter in 1994.

Weber is best known for his role on the show "Wings," which ran from 1990 to 1997, and was most recently seen in a recurring role on "2 Broke Girls" in 2012.

"Mad Men" Season 6 is just over a month away, and AMC's promotional campaign has advanced from releasing four images from the new season to setting those images to music and adding a new tagline.

The "Mad Men" video promo above invites viewers to "the affair of the year," a punny tagline that plays off the highly-anticipated premiere, the black-tie images and the ambiguous Season 5 ending that seemed to signal Don Draper was heading back to his cheating ways.

The new season reportedly fast-forwards further into the 1960s and features Betty Draper getting into "a lot of weird stuff," according to January Jones.

"Mad Men" Season 6 premieres on Sunday, April 7 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC with a two-hour episode. On April 14, the show moves to its regular 10 p.m. timeslot.

Kelly Rowland's New Album: 'The First Time I've Been So Stripped Away And Naked'

The following article is provided by Rolling Stone.

By SOWMYA KRISHNAMURTHY

Kelly Rowland kicked off the year with a bang, from Destiny's Child's surprise Super Bowl reunion to her jaw-dropping Grammy dress, which upstaged even Jennifer Lopez's leg. Now the 32-year-old singer is putting the finishing touches on her fourth solo album, "Talk a Good Game," led by the sultry single "Kisses Down Low." While waiting to board a flight at JFK Airport last week, Rowland spoke with Rolling Stone about stripping down (artistically) and her reaction to those pesky Twitter comments from Keyshia Cole.

100 Best Albums of the Nineties

"Kisses Down Low" is a flirty, fun song. Is this indicative of the direction of "Talk a Good Game?"
"Kisses Down Low" is just a piece of the story of Talk a Good Game. I'm really honest on this album. There's another song that I have, "Dirty Laundry." Even the title track is about relationships – the ins, the outs – all the interesting moments of relationships. I'm really ready for people to hear this album. It's kind of hard to keep it to myself.

"Dirty Laundry" is an intriguing title. Are you naming names?
It's the first time I've been so stripped away and naked. I had help with that, and that help was the-Dream. I was in the studio with Dream and he said, "I just want you to get deeper. The people want more. They want to be led into your life and know more about you." And I said, "Oh, God!" It's really nervous, because you don't know what people are going to say. In this moment, I really don't care. [Laughs]

100 Best Songs of the 2000s

Did you give your exes or whomever a heads-up that they would be aired out?
You know what? No, I really don't give a shit. [Laughs] It's nothing like that. My mom would say, "The truth shall set you free," so no matter what truth that is, I think it's important to be honest about it.

Who are you collaborating with on the new album?
I'm still putting everything together, but I called on some new talent from Canada, like T-Minus and Boi-1da, who I love being in the studio with. Kevin Cossum, who just pulls melody out of his ears, Rock City, who completely know how to ride a beat and a cadence that's crazy, and Mike WiLL's genius-osity – I'm gonna make up a word – where he just knows what the streets are talking about.

100 Greatest Artists of All Time

A few weeks ago, you wowed everyone at the Grammys in that Georges Chakra Couture dress. Trey Songz was drooling over you on the red carpet. I think he has a crush.
He's like a brother to me. I just hung out with him last night. We were all at the same place and hooked up and had a ball.

Did he awkwardly punch you in the arm and run away?
[Laughs] No, he didn't punch me and run away, but he did get me an extra drink – a "Trey Noir," as he calls it. I had a whole bunch of girlfriends with me that were completely staring at him and completely in love with him.

500 Greatest Albums of All Time

You reunited with Destiny's Child at the Super Bowl. Keyshia Cole received some blowback for criticizing Michelle Williams' performance on Twitter. Do you have any thoughts on her comments?
It didn't even make it on my radar until other people brought it up. It didn't even matter. We had a wonderful performance, and that's all I cared about. I was with my sisters and the three of us matter to each other, and that's all that counts. We matter to a lot more people, with all due respect, than her. So, I really don't care what she said.

Beyonce gave fans a glimpse into her personal life in "Life Is But a Dream," and you've mentioned that you might start a video journal like she did. Have you?
I have, and I really like it. I think it's really important. That way, you look back and see how far you've really come. For now, I'm gonna keep it private just for me.

100 Greatest Singers of All Time

Is there anything left you want to accomplish?
I want to do a line of accessories and shoes. I'm working on that right now. I always draw something in my tablet that I carry and I always have ideas on accessories, on what I would change or [how I would] hook certain things up. I want it to be affordable but luxurious, that every woman can have and feel sexy and fly in. I'm working on it. I'm headed to L.A. now to make sure of that. Early, early talks and early stages, but yeah, I'm a grown woman now, and it's time to do grown-woman things.

A History Of The Kardashian Family Money

$

The Kardashians are often accused of being so greedy they'll do anything to make a buck. But what many may not realize is that Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Rob were wealthy enough that they wouldn't have to work a day in their lives -- even before they started their plot for world domination in 2007.

According to the Trust Advisor, their father, Robert Kardashian, left his wife and kids a rumored $100 million estate in trust when he passed away from esophageal cancer in 2003. And while Kris Jenner is often accused of exploiting her family in the name of her 10 percent cut as their manager, it's not exactly as if she has ever been hard up for cash since Bruce Jenner is reportedly worth $100 million on his own.

And with this enormous wealth, the Kardashian-Jenner family has gone on to make even more money. In fact in 2011, a rep for their lifestyle brands told Women's Wear Daily, "the Kardashians could easily be a billion-dollar business worldwide in the next two years."

While it's impossible to know exactly how much the family is worth, Trust Advisor puts the Kardashian collective net worth at around $80 million. While that number seems a little low given that Kim herself is estimated to be worth $40 million alone, they also like to live large.

Let's take a look at some of the ways the Kardashians rake in the dough:

The New York Times' weekend edition painted a perfectly dismal picture of life in and around the nation's capital, partly to do with sequester and partly with Lindsay Lohan.

Trip Gabriel's front page story on the sequester-related demise of of the Northern Virginia economy had Gabriel hanging around a bus depot outside the Pentagon, talking to commuters about unpleasant changes they're making to their lives due to the $85 billion in spending cuts ordered by President Obama on Friday. The article ends with a commuter asking Gabriel if he knows of any leads for part time work.

D.C.'s problems are detailed again, but differently, in the Times' Style section, where Lindsay Lohan's former assistant Gavin Doyle airs his complaints about Washington (spoiler: they don't involve budget cuts or bus depots).

Doyle is described in his three-page profile as someone who "has become a regular presence on Web sites that exhaustively chronicle [New York's] party scene, a part of a glittering social circle and even an occasional tabloid figure, thanks to the antics of Lindsay Lohan, a close associate. He sees himself as a kind of intermediary between various celebrity worlds."

He does not, however, see himself as a fan of the District, having very unhappily, according to the article, gone to college here:

He attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., but found it “a miserable place."

“Everything closed at 5 p.m.,” he said with disdain. “Everything was wrong. It was a giant party school with a bunch of rich kids.”

Lonely and depressed, he moved to New York and transferred to a design and business program at Parsons, with a minor in photography.

A bizarre coda unrelated to D.C., though possibly related to a person's tolerance for the antics of Lindsay Lohan: Doyle told the New York Times that he'd like to do a book, like Helmut Newton's Private Property, using his own photos of the starlet.

“The camera loves her and she’s in love with the camera. She basically became a photo muse of mine,” he said.

Then Monday it was reported that Doyle -- widely reported be Lohan's firmer assistant, though he told the Times this is a misconception -- has been cooperating with prosecutors and is expected to be a key witness in Lohan's upcoming reckless driving trial. He was with Lohan when she smashed a Porche last June on a California highway.

Finally, to answer Doyle's observation about early restaurant closing times, while D.C.'s late-night dining scene has admittedly had its hiccups, there's always The Diner.

"No big deal or anything, but Bono stopped into Swan Oyster Depot a couple hours ago," wrote SF Weekly upon news of the sighting.

And if he was coming for the best oysters in San Francisco, we have a feeling Bono finally found what he was looking for. (Heyo!)

Though the unassuming seafood restaurant may be no-frills, it's certainly no secret. Swan's was named one of the "most important restaurants in America" by Bon Appetit earlier this year, and has been featured on Anthony Bourdain's "The Layover" and the Cooking Channel's "Hook, Line and Dinner."

Amanda Seyfried is clearing up the rumors that she and "Les Miserables" co-star Anne Hathaway are battling it out over their Oscars dresses.

The actresses were reportedly involved in a fashion feud after Hathaway ditched her Valentino dress for a Prada gown hours before the big award show upon learning Seyfried was wearing a very similar Alexander McQueen creation. According to Us Weekly, Hathaway threw a "fit" during Oscars rehearsals once she discovered Seyfried's look was extremely reminiscent of hers. Allegedly, Seyfried left the run-through due to Hathaway's tantrum.

But, according to Seyfried herself, there appears to be no fight. The 27-year-old star took to Twitter to address the reports, tweeting:

And although Hathaway never discussed the "feud," the 30-year-old Oscar winner did release a statement, apologizing to Valentino Garavani for opting not to wear his design.

"It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans," she explained. "Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino."

Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to work for the magazine that he said inspired him to pursue bodybuilding.

The former governor of California will become group executive editor and monthly columnist for magazines Flex and Muscle & Fitness, American Media Inc. announced Friday.

“It was in these magazines that I found the spark that inspired me to start lifting weights, and eventually move to America and realize my dreams, and I'm proud to return as Executive Editor,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

The body builder/actor/politician first took the editorship shortly after wining the 2003 gubernatorial recall election but resigned when he was criticized for conflict of interest, the Los Angeles Times reports. As governor, he was making decisions about how to regulate the dietary supplement industry, which supports the fitness magazines.

Schwarzenegger’s relationship with Muscle & Fitness and Flex dates back to 1968 when founder Joe Weider recruited the then-21-year-old to be the face of bodybuilding. Since that time, Schwarzenegger has appeared on the magazines’ covers more than 60 times, according to AMI.

“Bodybuilding has always been part of my life, and I know Muscle & Fitness and Flex will continue to motivate others - as it did me - to lift weights and lead a healthy lifestyle, promote the sport of bodybuilding, and, as Joe used to say in every issue, 'exceed themselves,'" Schwarzenegger said.

Since leaving the governor's office, Schwarzenegger has also returned to starring in action films and has launched the USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy.

Anne Hathaway's Ex Wants Presidential Pardon

Anne Hathaway has likely spent the last few years trying to forget about her ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri, who was arrested in 2008 and convicted of fraud and money laundering.

Follieri was released from federal prison in May 2012, and sources told the New York Post that the real estate scammer "must be dying that he's missing the limelight," now that Hathaway is a much-talked-about, Oscar-winning actress.

Sources say the Italian businessman, who dated Hathaway for four years, is trying to buy an energy company in Switzerland, but he's having a difficult time getting the money to do so. According to the Post's insider, Follieri misses America and wants to lobby for a presidential pardon, as he can't return to the U.S. as a felon.

Hathaway has since moved on from the con artist, and married Adam Shulman this past September, but the embarrassment of being duped by Follieri is believed to have caused her to second guess herself.

"I felt so foolish initially, and I expected everyone to judge me, but all I got from family members, friends and strangers – from every corner – was compassion. I found it so humbling, and it really got me through everything," Hathaway told the Telegraph in 2010.

Though the actress had no knowledge of his fraudulent dealings, she was pulled into the case when she was forced to hand over thousands of dollars worth of jewelry to the authorities, which later went up for auction.
