Jonathan Valania: Louis C.K Is a Prophet for the Age of Lessness

$

Louis C. K. is like the honey badger: He just doesn't give a sh*t.

"Everyone wants to be young forever but I actually like getting older," C.K. said last week when he kicked off another national tour with a sold-out three-night run at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia. "When you're 45 it's OK to look like this [gestures towards paunch and receding hairline] but when you're a teenager it's not OK. I want to do an It Gets Better for dumpy 17-year-old heterosexual boys."

Part man, part manatee, C.K. was dressed in muffin-topped jeans and a not entirely flattering blue t-shirt stretched across his lumpy thorax and cod-white limbs, a pruned-back Bozo-like shock of ginger hair and matching goatee.

He looks more like a roadie than a rock star, and yet he is. He's earned millions selling digital downloads of his stand up specials on his web site. He sold 6,000 tickets in Philadelphia alone, and probably could have sold twice that if he wanted to. He had the audience at 'Hello' and never let them go. After nearly two hours of torching just about every illusion of nobility we hold dear as a species with side-splitting precision, the audience gave him a standing ovation. Here's a taste:

LOUIS C.K.'s DAUGHTER: Daddy, why did my fish die?

LOUIS C.K.: Because who gives a shit? That's why.

**

When you have bacon in your mouth -- mmmmmmm -- it doesn't even matter who's president.

**

Putting on socks is the worst part of my day. Putting on socks with this [gestures towards his middle-aged spread] is like folding a bowling ball in half.

**

When your 45, your a**hole is like a bag of leaves nobody tied up laying out in the yard that some middle school kid kicks over on his way home.

**

Louis C.K. is the perfect comic for right now, for the Age of Lessness, when the economy is as clinically depressed as the national psyche is tortured, and the imperial hubris of American exceptionalism turns out to be just another Sarah Palin fever dream for people high on Fox News. He is a prophet of white male failure in the time when aging caucasian alpha dogs are losing their lock on entitlement as society is increasingly bred to be more inclusive and egalitarian.

He channels the bummer zeitgeist of the dawning of the 21st century the way Seinfeld defined the smug zeitgeist of the end of the 20th. Seinfeld had nothing to worry about. Louis C.K. has everything to worry about. Where Seinfeld was trim and fussy, anal retentive and proud of it, Louis C.K. is soft and sloppy, he sweats when he eats, he's divorced and loving it! You can almost hear the sleep apnea in his voice.

And yet his comedy has a much broader appeal than just beleaguered suburban schlubs beached on the shoals of middle age. Last night the audience was younger and less fat and bald than you might expect. You would think that his act would have all the chick appeal of a left-up toilet seat or a still-warm sweatsock, but last night at the Merriam nearly half the audience was female. That really shouldn't come as a surprise, because when you get right down to it everybody hurts and everybody laughs and C.K.'s humor rides that thin line in between.

Like Girls' Lena Dunham, he does not shy away from the flabby truth of his physicality when he holds a mirror up to himself and by extension his audience. That this should be so jarring and, in some quarters, disturbing, only points out how addicted we've become to being shown what we wish we looked like instead of what we actually look like. His comedy says 'I don't look like Brad Pitt and let's face it neither do you. And you know what? I'm OK with that and you can be too.' And yet his act transcends the one-note revelry in sloth, indolence and the cheap vicissitudes of encroaching decrepitude of lesser comedians. There is a freedom in the way he transmutes lacerating self-loathing, envy and resentment into comedic gold. His comedy doesn't just afford his audience the opportunity to laugh at themselves, it gives them permission to be who they are.

Judge Rejects Laurence Fishburne's Restraining Order

LOS ANGELES -- A judge refused Wednesday to grant Laurence Fishburne a three-year restraining order against a convicted felon who claims he owns the actor's home.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Carol Boas Goodson said she could not consider Mark Francisco's criminal history and she did not think his conduct warranted a lengthy restraining order.

Francisco, who police say was recently paroled on a cyberstalking case, went to the actor's home on Jan. 1 and threatened to evict the family. He also left a letter at the Oscar-nominated actor's home, but the judge said there was nothing threatening about it.

Fishburne's attorney, Donald Etra, said Francisco was waving an umbrella. The actor's security guard testified Wednesday that the man was agitated while speaking to him and police outside the gated home.

Neither Fishburne nor Francisco attended the hearing.

The actor had been given a temporary restraining order, but Goodson said Francisco's conduct didn't warrant an extension.

Etra said he disagreed with the ruling and will return to court if Francisco goes to the home again. "A man is entitled to feel secure in his home," Etra said.

Fishburne starred in "The Matrix" series and was nominated for a best actor Academy Award in 1993 for "What's Love Got to Do with It." His wife is an actress, appearing in "24" and other television series.

Cory Ashworth: Oprah In Vancouver: Good, Bad, Ugly Confessions

$

I love that Oprah Winfrey has lived the life of a pauper, a prince and a prophet. I admire that, against all odds, Oprah has influenced pop culture while inspiring millions of people around the world to develop, believe and understand the power of their own present.

My Oprah confession: I would do anything for a chance to meet her. I'd wear a Tina Turner wig for a year, I'd eat a 67-pound wagon worth of fat, or I'd quit my radio job hosting PEAK Mornings for a chance to ugly cry in front of my television hero: Oprah Winfrey.

I found out Vancouver's Oprah Confessions were a little different: some good, some bad, and some ugly. For a week, 102.7 The Peak gave away tickets to "An Inspirational Evening with Oprah Winfrey" in exchange for listeners' Oprah Confessions.

Here are some of my favorites:

  • "I love Oprah so much that I name every inanimate item (my car, bike, coffee machine, etc.) Gayle." — Tessa, Vancouver
  • "I confess that I think Oprah is totally overrated but my stepmom loves her and I need the brownie points!" — Victoria, Vancouver
  • "When I was a little girl in 1987, my Mom and I watched Oprah every day after school. I loved Oprah so much (she was my idol) that for Halloween this little freckled red head demanded my Mom dress me up like my Oprah. My Mom tried so hard to talk me out of it but I insisted - so she teased my red curls as big as she could and tried her best to cover my freckles, gave me long drop earning, shoulder pads but to my disappointment I looked nothing like Oprah. Near tears I convinced her to put some dark paint on my face (I know...I know..I was 8!!!). For me that did the trick and I happily headed out to trick or treat with the neighbourhood kids with only a couple of strange looks from the neighbours." — Shannon, Port Moody
  • "My fondest Oprah moments were watching with my Grandma (who wouldn't miss a show) - laughing, sometimes crying, and usually folding laundry. My grandma, still to this day, doesn't wear earrings because someone 20 years ago on the Oprah show said you shouldn't, if you wear glasses... this trend stubbornly continues with her hair style and clothing choices. Similar to the talk show legend, my Grandmother has been through a series of immense hardships in her life and continues to give the world to her family and friends. If we could share this with her it would be giving back to someone who has given so much in her life." — Sarah, Vancouver
  • "Pickle brine is my all time favourite beverage. I'd rather win a jar of pickle brine than go to Oprah's show." — Serisa, Vancouver
  • "There is no one on the planet I loathe more than Oprah Winfrey. Some might be appalled by that but I don't care. I am a proud Oprah hater!! However, my sweet mother loves Oprah and she would LOVE me forever if I won some tickets for her. I am also very poor and can't afford them. Although few can - have you seen the prices? Only Oprah herself might be able to afford to go!! Pretty please with sugar on top? I would be willing to sit through Oprah Winfrey for my momma. If that's not love then I surely don't know what love is." — Rae-Ann, Vancouver
  • "I'm winning these for my mom because she loves Oprah. In fact, one year, at Christmas dinner, in the folly of my youth, i mocked Oprah. You know what my mom did? My mom, being the fan that she is, asked me to go home. Thats right. She kicked her own daughter out on Christmas, for Oprah. That's how big of a fan she is. The biggest secret of all is, now that I'm older, I'm kind of a fan myself. But don't tell my mom that. She's already right about too many thing." — Joanna, Vancouver

Has 'Ben And Kate' Been Canceled?

It looks like "Ben and Kate" has been canceled.

The freshman comedy has been removed from Fox's schedule, a rep for the network confirmed to The Huffington Post.

"Ben and Kate" star Echo Kellum, who played Tommy on the series, tweeted in response to the cancellation:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Ben and Kate," which aired at 8 p.m. EST on Tuesdays, will be replaced by a second episode of its lead-in "Raising Hope" as of Tuesday, January 29. Beginning on March 12, "Hell's Kitchen" will air at 8 p.m. EST, before "New Girl" and "The Mindy Project," which seem to be staying put.

"Ben and Kate" -- which followed a young single mom (Dakota Johnson) and her kooky older brother (Nat Faxon) -- generated good buzz at the start of the 2012-2013 TV season, but failed to bring in the ratings. "Ben and Kate" debuted with a 2.0 rating in the key 18-49 demo but fell to averages a 1.4 average rating in the demo and 2.9 million viewers per episode, according to THR.

"Ben and Kate" received an order for an additional six episodes in October, bringing its total to 18 episodes. A rep for Fox did not yet know when and if the remaining five episodes would air.

The show's original executive producers Garrett Donovan and Neil Goldman left the series in September, citing creative differences. John Quaintance and David Feeney were upped to co-showrunners on "Ben and Kate" in November.

What Can New 'Mad Men' Photos Tell Us About Season 6?

$

"Man Men" Season 6 has a premiere date, and now we're getting a first look at the visual aesthetic of the new season. AMC released four "Mad Men" Season 6 images Wednesday, and because ravenous "Mad Men" fans are desperate for morsels of information that creator Matt Weiner is notoriously hesitant to reveal, let's analyze the photos for any possible details we can find.

In the first of the black and white images in the slideshow below, Don is surrounded by the three women in his life -- his wife Megan, ex-wife Betty and teenage daughter Betty -- and he seems as disengaged and unfulfilled as ever. His look jives with what Weiner told the Daily Beast about Draper's mindset in last season's final scene, describing him as "a man who had really tried on this coat, and really tried to live the fantasy of that relationship being the right relationship. Megan is filled with joy, she’s future-[facing], and she accepts him as he is. She definitely loves him, but she had her own will and that seemed to be hard on him."

Betty looks to have regained her slender figure, although last season's promo shots never hinted at the "Fat Betty" that surprised viewers in Season 5.

Elisabeth Moss' Peggy Olson, who left the firm for a new opportunity at rival agency Cutler Gleason and Chaough at the end of Season 5, seems to still be in Don's social and professional orbit, but appears physically and emotionally set apart from her former colleagues in one of the photos. As Weiner told The Daily Beast, "I never said to anyone that Elisabeth was leaving the show. I just said that the character was moving on and you’ll have to watch."

The all-smiles group shot of the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce crew certainly hints that business is booming at the agency. It's safe to assume the new office space they acquired last season is treating them well.

And no one seems to be embracing the time-jump to the 1960s more than Pete Campbell, who's sporting some excellent sideburns in a profile shot.

Check out the Season 6 images below and tune in for the two-hour "Mad Men" premiere on Sunday, April 7 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. On April 14, the show moves to its regular 10 p.m. timeslot.

There's no doubt that LL Cool J is a hip-hop heavyweight. The rapper has not only made a name for himself in music, but he has also carved out a career in film and television.

But despite the celebrity of his adulthood, the entertainer, whose real name is James Todd Smith, struggled with abuse as a child. In the latest installment of "Oprah's Next Chapter," the rapper opens up to media queen, Oprah Winfrey, about his experience being abused as a child.

LL Cool J wrote about his struggle in his 1998 autobiography "I Make My Own Rules," claiming that a man named Roscoe, who lived with the rapper's mother, beat him ruthlessly and tormented him psychologically. Fifteen years later, he is now sitting down to discuss the impact of the abuse on national television.

This is just another addition in a long line of intimate celebrity interviews Oprah has managed to snag, including her widely praised sit down with embattled cyclist Lance Armstrong.

Kristen Bell stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," where she had her infamous sloth meltdown a year ago, and was greeted with a surprise from the host.

"Alright, you ready for your surprise?" DeGeneres asked the pregnant "House of Lies" actress. "What do you think it is?"

Bell said she was scared. "I have a nurse standing by somewhere if you deliver," DeGeneres joked and then, she called in the surprise: a sloth named Lola.

Bell, who had previously met a sloth -- her favorite animal -- at her birthday party, fed Lola a banana while spouting facts regarding the sloth's teeth and chewing sounds.

As Bell marveled at the sloth, DeGeneres said she had some gifts for Bell's baby. "Who cares about the baby?" Bell joked. DeGeneres presented Bell with a basket full of sloth-related baby items, including an onesie. "Do you think it's inappropriate if I ask the doctor to go right from here and into this before it's even on my chest?" Bell asked.

"Not at all," DeGeneres said.

Should They Sing The Next James Bond Theme?

"This is the end," Adele sings at the beginning of "Skyfall," the Oscar-nominated title track from the film of the same name.

Maybe she was right.

"Skyfall," the 23rd entry in the James Bond franchise, was arguably the best 007 film ever: It won critical acclaim ("Skyfall" has a 92 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was actually in the Oscar conversation for Best Picture), populist approval ("Skyfall" has earned over $1 billion worldwide) and employed the biggest recording star of the moment to sing its theme song.

About that: If you're James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, where do you go after Adele, who is poised to win an Oscar for Best Original Song -- a first for a Bond theme -- at the Academy Awards on Feb. 24? Has the 24-year-old chanteuse ruined Bond themes for everyone else?

Probably not? To help in the process, HuffPost Entertainment has compiled a list of 19 artists who could conceivably sing the next Bond theme, without significantly embarrassing themselves when compared to Adele.

We can't get enough of Quvenzhané Wallis! So it's a good thing the 9-year-old star, who recently became the youngest "Best Actress" Oscar nominee, is serving us up a double dose of adorable today!

When we last checked in with Hollywood's little darling, she was chopping it up with Vogue.com's Andre Leon Talley and proclaiming "fashion is my kryptonite!" We can't make this up, people.

Now she can officially add covergirl to her growing list of accomplishments. Beaming a big bright smile, Quvenzhané graces the cover of Entertainment Weekly's special Oscar issue.

The pint-sized star ditched her frilly frocks and puppy shaped purses for a more masculine ensemble--a dark pant suit, white shirt and black-and-white striped tie. Thank goodness for her curly hair or the glossy would have totally turned her into a little boy. We would have rather seen the "Beasts of the Southern Wilds" star in a girly look, but she's super cute either way.

Ready for your second serving of adorable?

NBC's Ann Curry recently caught up with Quvenzhané down in her home state of Lousiana to learn more about her rise to fame. Quvenzhané talks about the moment she found out about her historic Oscar nomination, teaches Ann how to eat crayfish "Louisiana style" (she can eat 5 pounds of the mini crustaceans), sings a little Justin Bieber (she's really good) and says that she's a "triple threat."

"That means you do three things and try to do it at once. Like a 3-in-1 shampoo," Quvenzhané tells NBC."Yup, I'm a 3-in-1. Triple threat!"

I mean, really? Could she get any cuter? Nope, not possible.

Here's a look at Quvenzhané's EW cover and check out a clip from her NBC News interview above.
