Oliver Noble: Moby Talks To Huffington Post

After becoming a self-described New York City "townie," musician and DJ Moby moved west, becoming a strong Los Angeles evangelist. However, to mark the new year, the six-time Grammy award-nominated artist is planning a trip back to the Big Apple to DJ Unicorn Meat's New Year's Eve event, a secret warehouse show that he describes as a throwback to early 90s raves.

In preparation for the show Moby talked exclusively with The Huffington Post about his choice to leave New York for L.A., what you play as David Lynch's wedding DJ and the two sound effects that he feels sum up the policies of the Republican Party.

***

On Leaving New York City for Los Angeles

The first time I got drunk on First Avenue was in 1979 so I really felt like, on one hand, it had become a little bit too familiar. Also, I don't want to be a complainer but, the Lower East Side that I grew up with is unfortunately quite a lot different from the Lower East Side as it exists now. I found myself, in the last few years I was living in New York, I would leave my apartment and instead of having to deal with drunk artists I was dealing with drunk hedge fund managers. And then I realized that everything in my neighborhood, it didn't exist for the people who lived in the neighborhood, it existed for tourists. In a strange way I felt like it was just time to go and then the choice really became move to Brooklyn, where at this point 99 percent of my friends in New York live, or move to L.A. For me L.A. won out simply because it's warm in the winter and I feel like real estate in L.A. is a lot cheaper so a lot of weird artists can afford to live here who can't afford to live in New York.

On Switching From Vinyl to Digital for DJing

Up until just a few years ago I still used to DJ with vinyl but then I had this terrifying experience, I went to Belgium and I was going to be DJing in Europe and I was waiting for my records to come off the luggage belt and they didn't come off. Eventually we found them but there was this moment I realized, if I was on tour and I lost a guitar we could just go buy a new guitar but if you're a DJ and you lose your records you just can't play, you might as well go home. So that's when I made the switch to basically just using a laptop... I have a bunch of the Pioneer CDJs... you can control the music with these weird old CD players that are almost like an instrument in their own right... anything you can do with a turntable you can do with them and you can also do really amazing things with them like create loops, play things backwards, speed things up remarkably fast, slow things down, do all these effects. So I guess I'm an accidental shill for Pioneer CDJs.

On Advice to People DJing Their Own New Year's Eve Parties

Basically pay attention to how people are responding. I think we've all been to those events where there's a DJ playing and no one is in anyway enjoying what they're doing and that's when it sort of becomes the DJ's job to be a little bit responsive to what people actually want to listen to... for example I went to David Lynch's wedding recently and my wedding gift to him was to be the DJ. People ask me "what do you play at a David Lynch wedding? Do you play records of Tuvan throat singers backwards?" And I was like, no, actually I was a cliché wedding DJ because that's what his family wanted to hear so I played Van Morrison and Beyonce and the sort of things you'd want to hear at a wedding.

On the Debate Over Whether DJs Are "Real Musicians"

When I was really young I grew up playing classical music and then I had a music teacher and we studied a lot of jazz fusion and a lot of jazz theory and then I started playing in a punk rock band when I was around 14 or 15 and it broke my guitar teacher's heart because he really had visions of me being a child prodigy, playing Bach on the classical guitar, and his criticism of punk at the time was that it wasn't "real music." And then when hip-hop started people said that it's not real music and then when house music started people said that it's not real music. So personally, all I care about is how the music effects me emotionally and how the music effects other people emotionally whether it's a virtuoso violinist playing Bach cantatas or it's a dubstep DJ playing someone else's records. To me, selfishly, personally, subjectively all I care about is my response to the music when it's being played. So I'm not too concerned about how the music is made, I'm much more concerned about how I respond to it emotionally.

On His Latest Projects

Right now I'm just trying to finish my next album and that's doing a bunch of different dance collaborations with a bunch of young DJs... and also I made this really long ambient album that's just purely to be played very quietly in the background and I'm trying to figure out if I can release it and how I should release it. I'm trying to figure out how does one release a three hour long album of incredibly minimal, quiet, ambient music.

On His 1996 Track "Republican Party"

It was basically just a sample of a baby crying and a sample of old white guys laughing and at the time I felt like it summed up Republican Party policy pretty well. [I think today it represents Republican policies] even more so, the problem is the Republican Party just keeps getting pushed further and further to the right. It's a problem for them, it's certainly not a problem for Democrats as evidenced by the last election... it seems like the Republican Party just gets older, crazier, whiter and angrier by the day.

'Downton Abbey' Spoilers: Julian Fellowes On Dan Stevens' Exit

SPOILER ALERT -- do not read on if you have yet to see the 2012 "Downton Abbey" Christmas special, which aired in the UK on December 25.

The halls of "Downton Abbey" will be a little emptier next season. Earlier this week, viewers were shocked when it was confirmed that Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley) would not be returning for Season 4 of the period drama, after his character definitively exited the series in this year's Christmas Special.

Now, "Downton" creator Julian Fellowes has weighed in on the actor's abrupt exit, telling British newspaper the Daily Telegraph, "We have always tried to persuade him to stay. He had done fantastically well for the series and his creation of Matthew was terrific. But this is life. Dan felt that this was right thing for him, and the right moment to move on to different areas."

Stevens' exit proved particularly controversial, considering that Matthew was killed in the Christmas episode, rather than the door being left open for a future return. According to the Telegraph, "Downton's" British broadcaster, ITV, has since been inundated with complaints that the storyline was "a 'travesty', a 'tragedy' and an 'outrage', with some saying the ending had 'ruined their Christmas'."

But Fellowes maintained that killing Matthew was really the only course that the show could take once Stevens decided to depart. “If he had been prepared to come back for maybe two or three episodes in a series, that would be different. Then we could have had a foreign posting or invented a career that would have made it possible for him to be away," the creator said. "Otherwise we would have had to make this tremendously successful love affair between Mary and Matthew unhappy, which I didn’t feel would be believable ... So we didn’t really have any option. By him dying, their love can remain in tact."

While Season 3 has yet to air on PBS in the US, rumors of Stevens' exit began circulating as early as March, when it was revealed that Stevens, Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil) and Siobhan Finneran (O’Brien) hadn't renewed their contracts past Season 3. The speculation began anew after the actor relocated to New York to star in "The Heiress" on Broadway. "New York for me is going to be one big adventure," Stevens said at the time. "I will be taking the whole family out and we will be there for six months. I don’t know if I will be returning to 'Downton.'"

After the episode aired, Stevens explained his decision to exit the show. “We were always optioned for three years,” he told the Telegraph. “And when that came up it was a very difficult decision. But it felt like a good time to take stock, to take a moment. From a personal point of view, I wanted a chance to do other things."

ITV then released a statement on Stevens' departure in an attempt to console the show's heartbroken audience: "After three successful series and two Christmas editions of 'Downton Abbey,' Dan Stevens decided not to renew his contract beyond the initial three years he had been contracted ... Over the last three years, audiences across the world have been captivated by the ups and downs of Mary and Matthew’s relationship, culminating in their wedding. Fans have enjoyed what has become a solid and loving marriage. It is for this reason that the Producers decided Matthew and Mary could not simply be estranged or parted, resulting in his untimely and tragic death at the end of the Christmas episode."

Season 3 of "Downton Abbey" premieres in the U.S. on Sun., Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. EST on PBS.

Western Character Actor Dies At 91

LOS ANGELES -- Harry Carey Jr., a character actor who starred in such Westerns as "3 Godfathers" and "Wagon Master," has died. He was 91.

His daughter, Melinda Carey, said he died Thursday of natural causes surrounded by family at a hospice facility in Santa Barbara, Calif.

"He went out as gracefully as he came in," she said Friday.

Carey's career spanned more than 50 years and included such John Ford classics as "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "The Searchers" and "The Long Gray Line." Later in life, he appeared in the movies "Gremlins" and "Back to the Future Part III."

His memoir, "Company of Heroes: My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company," was published in 1994.

While he lacked the leading-man stature of longtime friend and co-star John Wayne, Carey's boyish looks and horse-riding skills earned him roles in many of Ford's films.

He and fellow character Ben Johnson famously learned to stand simultaneously on two galloping horses – a trick known as roman riding – for the 1950 film "Rio Grande" starring Wayne.

"My journey has been that of a character actor," he wrote in his memoir. "I've worked with the great and the not-so-great. But mostly I've worked with men and women who loved their profession, and who like me, had kids to raise and houses to pay for."

Carey was the son of silent-film Western star Harry Carey Sr. and actress Olive Carey. He was born on May 16, 1921, on his family's ranch and graduated from Hollywood's Black-Foxe Military Institute.

During World War II, he served in the Navy and worked with Ford on films for the Navy.

He is survived by his wife, a son, two daughters, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Fake YouTube Views Purged

Music snobs are enjoying a taste of schadenfreude after a massive audit of YouTube video channels cut 2 billion fake views from record company sites.

Google made good on its promise to weed out views inflated by artificial means last week, according to Daily Dot. Record company sites impacted included titans like Universal Music Group, which reportedly lost 1 billion of its 7 billion views, and Sony, who lost 850 million views.

The cuts affected marquee names like Rhianna, Beyonce and Justin Bieber. YouTube said in a statement that the figures had been deliberately, artificially inflated.

"This was not a bug or a security breach. This was an enforcement of our view count policy," the company, which is owned by Google, wrote.

The push was enacted to combat hackers and social media promotion sites that built up views and likes on YouTube, making them appear more popular and driving advertising revenue.

Users of sites like YouLikeHits and AddMeFast, popular among so-called black hat social optimizers, bemoaned their losses on forums following the YouTube purge.

Such sites appear to have violated the YouTube terms of service by utilizing "robots, spiders... and offline readers" to "[send] more request messages to the YouTube servers in a given period of time than a human can reasonably produce in the same period."

As news of the cuts spread, some critics suggested other recording artist social media could be similarly manipulated.

While the cuts may be seem dire, not every mega-hit was gravely affected. For example, the count for viral juggernaut "Gangnam Style," a Universal Music Group jam, is still dancing along at more than 1 billion views, a YouTube record.

This isn't the first bit of housecleaning implemented by YouTube this year. In October, Kotaku reported that YouTube would start ranking its most popular videos by "engagement" -- how long videos are watched -- rather than mere view counts.

The blog suggested such a change threatened to knock "Gangnam Style" off of its invisible horse, but it doesn't appear to have yet.

Katt Williams hasn't had the best year.

The comedian, 39, who has had multiple run-ins with authorities over the past few months -- including a parking violation, driving infraction, bar fight, hotel disturbance and gun violation -- was arrested yesterday morning (Dec. 28) on suspicion of felony child endangerment at his home in Los Angeles, Calif.

According to TMZ, Williams was jailed and his four kids were taken away after his Woodland Hills house was raided by cops, who found numerous guns and illegal drugs.

TMZ caught up with Williams following his release from the LAPD's Valley Jail in Van Nuys last night, where he boasted about gun control laws and his various brushes with the law.

When asked about his gun-related child endangerment charges, Williams boasted, "How do you keep kids safe without guns?"

"If the police come in and raid my place and break into my gun boxes, you're gonna find guns!" he added in the video. "I'm not in a gang, what difference does it make?"

Williams also said that his children were not around illegal drugs, explaining, "There was no drugs ... Weed is not a drug."

Authorities have placed Williams' kids in protective custody and reportedly, the case will go to court next week for possible felony child endangerment charges.

Kim Kardashian Slams Kris And Bruce Split Rumors

Kim Kardashian is sick and tired of the lies.

The reality star is fuming over reports that her mom Kris Jenner, 57, and step dad Bruce Jenner, 63, are headed towards divorce after the couple sat separately at the Los Angeles Clippers game on Dec. 25, where their son-in-law Lamar Odom was playing.

Kim, 32, took to her blog on Dec. 28 to slam rumors that her mom and Bruce were ending their 21-year marriage, explaining what exactly happened on Christmas day.

It was funny how everyone made a big deal about Bruce and my mom not sitting together, saying it was fueling these ridiculous divorce rumors. Well I got four court-side seats, so Kanye [West] and I obviously sat in two of them and then we wanted Khloé up front too, since it's her husband playing, and [then] mom joined us too.

My mom got eight other seats right behind us for the family, where Bruce sat with everyone else. I started to feel a little ill (I caught the flu over the Christmas holidays!) so Kanye and I left at half time and Bruce came to the front and sat with my mom. It’s a simple as that!

Kim even revealed the Kardashian clan "had the best family Christmas ever!"

Charlie Sheen seems to have found himself a new BFF. The controversial actor snapped a picture with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with the caption "From Boyle Heights 2 Mayor of LA..! @hotelelganzo 2 party w/SHEEN at SheenZ..! Antonio Villaraigosa knows how to party!"

The image shows Sheen, skinny arm and all, with his arm around a seemingly relaxed Villaraigosa. The picture was reportedly taken at Cabo's Hotel El Ganzo where Sheen was promoting the grand opening of a bar.

With Sheen's illustrious history with drugs, it's risky for Villaraigosa to be seen "partying" with the actor. However, Sheen, who had a very public downward spiral, seems to be turning over a new leaf. The actor recently donated $75,000 to a 10-year-old girl with cancer and gave "Scary Movie 5" costar Lindsay Lohan money to pay her 2009 taxes.

This isn't Villaraigosa's first celebrity acquaintance -- just last week the mayor shot down rumors that he was dating actress Eva Longoria.

Back in July, our favorite "Wizards of Waverly Place" little brother talked to HuffPost Teen about his next project: a movie reboot of the classic Mark Twain novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Now, the trailer has finally arrived. Watch the video above for a first look at Jake T. Austin in the role of Huckleberry Finn, alongside Joel Courtney (who you may recognize from the movie "Super 8") as Tom Sawyer.

"Filming was a wild experience. For three or four weeks, we were jumping around everywhere in shuttle vans and going to sets," Jake told HuffPost Teen. "It was a lot of fun."

Although the "Wizards" TV show has ended for good, Jake reunited with his cast-mates Selena Gomez, Gregg Sulkin, and Jennifer Stone earlier this year to film a special movie, slated to be released in early 2013. The first TV movie based on the magical kids' series, which aired last January, was the second most-watched cable TV movie of all time (right behind "High School Musical 2").

Rapper Azealia Banks Calls Rap 'Tacky'

Rapper Azealia Banks has some harsh words for the music that made her famous. In an interview with Hypetrak, Banks called rap "unladylike" and "tacky" -- take a look in the video above.

"I'd eventually like to stop rapping, that's just the honest truth," Banks said. "One day I don't wanna rap anymore, just because I think it's easy, but I think it's kinda tacky. I think it's very unladylike. I like it but I think I'm gonna get tired of it."

Banks was heralded as "the next big thing" in the world of rap in late 2011, after the release of her "212" single.

The rapper has a history of being outspoken -- Banks made waves earlier this year when she came out as bisexual in The New York Times. "I'm not trying to be, like, the bisexual, lesbian rapper," she told NYT. "I don't live on other people's terms." She also recently boycotted Dolce & Gabbana for marketing what she called "racist" clothing.

Banks' studio album, "Broke with Expensive Taste," is due out Feb. 12, 2013.

Jennifer Lawrence: 'I'm Kind Of An Old Lady'

Jennifer Lawrence might be the "most desirable woman" in Hollywood, but the actress credits junk food and "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" for her incredible physique.

That's right.

The "Silver Linings Playbook" star admits she's a couch potato, saying she'd much rather lounge all day than head to the gym or go out partying with friends.

"I don't like going out that much. I'm kind of an old lady," Lawrence, 22, tells the January issue of Marie Claire South Africa of her social life. "After it's 11, I'm like, 'Don't these kids ever get tired?' When I'm out, I think about my couch. Like, 'It would be awesome to be on it right now. I bet there's an episode of 'Dance Moms' on. Am I missing a new episode of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians?' "I'm just stressed by the idea of missing them."

Not only that, Lawrence admits she loves to have gatherings in her two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles, Calif., where she serves up bowls of junk food.

"I like people to come over to my place," the Golden Globe-nominated actress confesses. "It's like a reality TV show cave. I just learned how to work TiVO. That changed my life."

"Reality TV is my silver lining," Lawrence jokes. "At the end of the day there's probably nothing that makes me feel better than junk food and reality TV."

We hear you, girl!

Jill Brooke: Nora Ephron Taught Us How to Live and Die

$
0
0

In reflecting on all the people who passed away this year, I am thinking of Nora Ephron and how this witty, wise and loving woman taught us not only how to live but also how to die.

I last saw Nora Ephron earlier this year at the memorial for best-selling author Charla Krupp, who shocked her circle of loyal devoted friends by never divulging her terminal illness. While Nora was behind me as we signed our names on the guest book, a few friends, with tear rimmed eyes, came up to us questioning how anyone could keep a terminal illness secret or would want to make that choice. "We live in the age of the Internet where everyone tells everyone everything," cried one friend.

"The credit should go to a good marriage," I said, referring to Charla's partnership to Time magazine's theater critic Richard Zoglin. "How lucky was she that her husband's love was enough that she didn't need anyone else."

I then turned to Nora and for some inexplicable reason said, "Don't you agree?" In owl-like black sunglasses, the celebrated writer of romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally nodded her head and whispered, "That is so true." Only now I realize she most likely was thinking of her own husband, writer Nick Pileggi, whose quiet unwavering support gave her the protective cocoon to keep her secret intact -- even from her children.

As Frank Rich wrote in his New York Magazinepiece about Ephron, people have legitimate reasons to want to keep pending death a secret. He said his friend may have not wanted "her illness to change the weather in any room she entered. She did not want to spend every day fending off an onslaught of concerned questions. She didn't want to be thought of as a lesser person. She did not want friends to see her falling apart."

Rich went on to share how at Ephron's memorial in New York City, her son Max Bernstein reflected on his mother's unexpected gift for not divulging the seriousness of her illness.

"I think that she just kept quiet so the rest of us could keep enjoying being with her as much as possible," Max said at the memorial. "All of those moments would have been bittersweet or sanctimonious, flanked by an asterisk, leading to a footnote that says, "There aren't many of these left." Then he added, "I am so glad they weren't that way."

But it couldn't have been that way for Max or his brother Jacob without Nora's husband Nick Pileggi by her side. Yes, this man who she married in 1987 was a good fella in the best of ways.

As a culture, we often focus on the lust and laughs of new marriages. But want to see passion at its sexiest? For me, it is witnessing the long-term marriages of couples whose passion for loyalty and the respect for their history together endures so that each spouse can feel safe and not judged during times of weakness. Long term marriages are the real love stories of our time. Just wish there were more of them.

Lucky Nora had Nick to discuss the challenges of squeezing joy from life with rationed time. She had him to give her the chicken soup when treatments made her sick and cranky. She had him to cry with at night when the fear of the unknown choked her with anxiety. Nora had Nick to soothe her apprehensions so her public face could still be smiling. So she could still be working. So she could still be living the life she wanted. So she could be, as she often said, "the heroine of your life, not the victim."

Friends of course lamented not being able to say farewell. But as Bruce Feiler wrote in the New York Times, farewell conversations are usually awkward and forced. What do you say after goodbye? Sorry this happened and it sucks? As I've witnessed, the dying often feel obligated to make their friends feel better about their condition. It becomes stressful for them. They only feel safe with a trusted few.

Oddly enough, Nora Ephron, the woman who eagerly doled out delicious recipes for Thanksgiving dinners, never did share the one recipe many covet: The recipe for a loving devoted marriage. With the divorce rate hovering towards 50 percent, few will have built a reservoir of good times to not need anyone else when the end of life comes.

In fact one of Nora Ephron's greatest successes ends up proving not only that in divorce, wife can go on, but that she can marry well too.

LOS ANGELES — Katt Williams, the comedian who has repeatedly found himself on the wrong side of the law, is out on bail after being arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of a stolen gun.

Police Officer Norma Eisenman says Williams was taken into custody Friday after the LA County Department of Children and Family Services did a welfare check at his home. Authorities found more than one firearm, one of which had been reported stolen.

Eisenman says the DCFS did not specify how many children lived at the home or whether they were removed.

The 41-year-old was arrested this month on a felony warrant related to a police chase. In November, he was accused of hitting a man on the head with a bottle during a fight.
