Rooney Mara Disses 'SVU' Role: 'Awful, So Stupid'

0
0

Rooney Mara is set for her big breakout in the upcoming "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," but it's not as if the 26-year old is making her Hollywood debut. That came in a 2006 episode of "Law & Order: SVU," though she seems to rather regret that first big show business outing.

"It was so awful. So stupid," Mara tells Allure of her turn on the show. "Me and my boyfriend -- although I [didn't] look old enough to have a boyfriend -- went and beat up these fat people, and at the end of the show you find out that I used to be obese and I hate fat people. It's ridiculous. Who would ever do that? Who would beat someone up because they're fat?"

Unfortunately, the answer is that a lot of people would, which is probably why it made it to the ripped-from-the-headlines show. In any case, it was just the first of a series of different TV and film appearances over the next five years. There were the episodes of "Women's Murder Club," "The Cleaner" and "ER," as well as parts in "Youth In Revolt," "Tanner Hall," "A Nightmare On Elm Street" and then, the fateful opening scene in "The Social Network."

That Oscar-nominated film's director, David Fincher, was won over by Mara's scene-stealing dumping of Jessie Eisenberg's Mark Zuckerberg, and fought to make sure she got the lead in his adaptation of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." In fact, her light resume actually worked in her favor when it came to that casting call.

"I don't think [director] David [Fincher]'s intention was ever to hire someone well-known," she tells Allure. "To make this movie, he needed someone that people were unfamiliar with because it's the only way they would really believe this character. She's such a mystery. You couldn't hire someone that people already have a relationship with."

Sean Hayes Talks Betty White, Oprah Winfrey On 'Late Late Show'

As his production company is behind TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland," Sean Hayes has gotten to know Betty White very well. He even has a guest spot coming up in the third season of the hit show. He admitted that he's amazing by her energy at nearly 90 years old on "The Late Late Show" (Weeknights, 12:30AM ET on CBS).

"She's actually 112," Craig Ferguson quipped. "Lithe for her age."

The pair shifted gears a bit when Ferguson asked Hayes if he knew Oprah Winfrey. Without missing a beat, Hayes responded, "She actually drove me today." He even said she was outside the studio waiting for him with Stedman.

It was certainly gracious of her to take the time out of her schedule so shortly after her trip to Haiti, where she toured an encampment for Haitians displaced by the massive 2010 earthquake.

Tom Hanks Has A Very Special Christmas Greeting On 'Late Show'

Tom Hanks was feeling festive on "The Late Show With David Letterman" (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) and to get everybody else in the mood he brought along a sprig of mistletoe so he could record a very special Christmas greeting.

Getting up-close and personal with the camera, Hanks leaned right in, said "Merry Christmas, Baby," and then planted a big wet sloppy kiss on the lens. Ever the gentleman, Hanks then grabbed some Windex and a cloth, and cleaned off his lip prints.

Later, after ribbing host David Letterman about his inability to type fast, Hanks threw down the gauntlet, boasting that he can type "hangin' and bangin'"in less than one second. Challenge accepted, Letterman gave him control of the "Late Show" desk.

Unfortunately for Hanks, his typing prowess didn't quite match up to his bragging, and all he could manage was "kgi n and bangin."

Could Kim Kardashian Get Banned From Australia?

Maybe work equals pleasure for Kim Kardashian. On the "Chelsea Lately" (Weeknights, 11PM ET on E!), Chelsea Handler talked about Kardashian being placed on Australia's immigration watch list. She'd apparently cited the reason for her visit as pleasure and then proceeded to promote everything from beer to handbags to "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and "Kourtney and Kim Take New York."

"So now any future visits to Australia will be highly scrutinized and she could eventually be banned," Handler said. "We have to take care of that lunatic Mel Gibson and you guys can't take Kim Kardashian?"

Panelist Sarah Colonna speculated about a possible code system put in place for Kardashian sightings down under. "It's a code orange when she's coming with a tan," she said. "Code black when she's coming with a boyfriend."

That joke is particularly timely considering Kardashian was reportedly caught 'canoodling' with Kanye West. She also recently picked up some of Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry on her way to a Las Vegas family holiday. Is all this business -- or pleasure?

TSA Agents Leave Note In Rapper's Luggage

Is the TSA at it again?

Rapper Freddie Gibbs claims that an unidentified TSA officer left a note in his checked bag reading "C'Mon Son," after the officer found Gibbs' pot in his carry-on bag.

Check out the photo of the note with the pot here.

There are quite a few questions about this, however. Is a TSA agent required to confiscate the illegal drug and turn in the rapper? And did Gibbs really think it was a good idea to bring that much pot on a plane in checked baggage? And if it all checks out, could Gibbs have come in contact with the most generous TSA officer ever?!

Regardless, if it's true, this note-writing by the TSA has to stop. Back in October, a TSA agent, who has since been fired, left a note reading "Get Your Freak On Girl" after finding a vibrator in a woman's checked luggage.

What do you think of Gibbs' tweet? Real or fake?

Ryan Gosling, Zooey Deschanel Tell McDonald's 'I'm Hating It'

In November, after an undercover video aired depicting mistreatment of egg-laying hens at Sparboe Farms, a McDonald's supplier, McDonald's swiftly dropped the company. Target soon followed suit, and Sparboe Farms put out a video explaining that what the investigation discovered was "completely at odds with our animal welfare policies."

Though McDonald's took fast action to remove Sparboe as a supplier, to some celebrities, this move was not enough. In a letter [pdf] to Jim Skinner, the CEO of McDonald's, ten celebrities including Ryan Gosling, Zooey Deschanel and Alicia Silverstone encourage McDonald's to buy 100% cage-free eggs, which the company already does in Europe.

The letter reads in part:

While McDonald's has already established a 100% cage-free purchasing policy in Europe, your U.S. restaurants continue to support egg factory farms that confine hens for most of their lives in cages so small they can’t even spread their wings.nearly anything that comes naturally to them. Common sense tells us that animals with legs and wings should be given the basic freedom to move.

Sadly, there is not a single federal law to protect hens from cruelty from the time they hatch to the time they are killed. While McDonald's brags about the "billions and billions served," millions of hens exploited for your restaurants are being grossly underserved. In fact, these animals are being abused in ways that would land your egg suppliers in jail, if dogs or cats were the victims.

The full list of the letter's signers are: Ryan Gosling, Emily Deschanel, Alicia Silverstone, Kristen Bauer, Bryan Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Wendie Malick, Maria Menounos, Steve-O, and Ed Begley Jr. To read the full letter, check out McDonaldsCruelty.com/letter.

Jill Zarin's Family Blessed By The Dalai Lama?

0
0

Jill Zarin may no longer have the approval of Bethenny Frankel, but now the former "Real Housewives" star has the blessing of a power even higher than the Skinnygirl herself -- the Dalai Lama

"Art Smith [Zarin's friend and Oprah's chef] gave my daughter a prayer shawl from the Dalai Lama," Zarin tells me. "We had just met that day, but we had chemistry."

"He knew that Ally [Zarin's daughter] had been to India and was really into Buddhism and the whole prayer thing ... and the Dalai Lama," Zarin says. "We went to [Smith's] hotel, and he gave it to me to give to my daughter -- a white prayer shawl. Swear to God. Blessed by the Dalai Lama."

Zarin explains that Smith received the prayer shawl from the Dalai Lama because he had cooked for the spiritual leader the night before in Washington, D.C. The next day, Zarin and Smith met while they were both judging an episode of "Iron Chef," which will air on Christmas.

"I didn't know Lady Gaga and Art were best friends," Zarin says, sounding as though she would have rather been gifted the pop star's meat dress than a prayer shawl. "Art's opening up the restaurant with her father. I emailed him and I said, 'Art, can I come to the restaurant?' And he said, 'as soon as we open.'"

Who needs the Skinnygirl when you can have Oprah's chef, Gaga and the Dalai Lama at your fingertips?

Killed By Toxic Mold?

Brittany Murphy's mother claims toxic mold found in her daughter's Hollywood home is to blame for both Brittany and her son-in-law's Simon Monjack's deaths.

Brittany died of pneumonia in 2009 and just months later her husband suffered the same fate.

TMZ reports Brittany's mother Sharon Murphy claims the people who built the house are to blame for the mold that caused their illnesses. In a new lawsuit, Sharon alleges she was misled by her lawyers and tricked into giving up her rights to sue the builders for wrongful death.

According to TMZ, Murphy's mother says her lawyers convinced her to accept a settlement offer for the construction problems in January, but they didn't explain that the settlement included a stipulation so that she would never be able to sue the builders for their alleged role in her daughter's death.

Not content with this, Sharon has hired a new attorney to sue her former ones for legal malpractice and demanding they pay her what she could have won in a wrongful death suit.

When Murphy passed away two years ago at the age of 32, many speculated her death was drug or eating disorder related, however it was determined the actress died of natural causes.

Kourtney Kardashian is a health food lover and just because she's pregnant with her second child she's not eating whatever she wants.

"I'm just eating whatever I can... whatever I can tolerate," she told Us Weekly at Thursday's opening of Kardashian Khaos at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The 32-year-old mom to Mason, says she sticking with largely "bland" diet, and tells the magazine there are fewer foods she can tolerate with her second pregnancy.

When the reality star was pregnant back in 2009, she told People she had more healthy cravings than her normal eating habits, often craving fruit and smoothies.

"I wasn't normally a breakfast person. [Now] I eat breakfast the second I get up and I'm definitely hungry all throughout the day," she said.

During her last pregnancy Kourtney tweeted to her fans that her most intense craving was, "A waffle with butter and syrup. Weirdest maybe a relish and mayo sandwich, but only once thank god!"

Sounds like things are a little different the second time around.

Questlove: What Is Soul?: Hamhocks, Cornflakes & Divas

0
0

What is Soul?

That's a big question that The Roots asked ourselves a lot while we were working with lots of other music lovers on VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul -- a show you can and should see tonight for yourselves at 9PM/8 C on VH1.

The best definition of soul that I ever heard came from Funkadelic. During Funkadelic's first appearance on PBS back in 1971, the great George Clinton declared, "Soul is a hamhock in your cornflakes." George proclaimed this wisdom while fronting this fantastic, crazy-looking band on their first big syndicated television appearance. For me, the hamhock represented plantation-era food somehow now being integrated right into Middle America, straight into the land of cornflakes. I still stick to Funkadelic's excellent theory.

Soul is actually secular gospel, and if you look at the early soul examples, it was very controversial for Ray Charles to add secular love lyrics to what was known as gospel records of the time. Soul is really the spiritual orgasm that you feel when a piece of music touches you -- and it doesn't necessarily have to be black music either. For instance, there's a point around eight minutes into "In My Time Of Dying" by Led Zeppelin where they are just so in the zone that it really hits me in a way that I personally consider soul as much as a great old Lou Rawls record. In that way, you could soul really is in the eyes and ears of the beholder.

Being part of VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul has been quite a soulful and interesting experience. As an avid watcher of these kinds of shows, I'd be the kid growing up sitting in front of the TV watching with a bowl of popcorn. Now as an adult, I'm the guy with his laptop on deck giving his opinion on my website or now on Twitter. This time, I'm the guy on the television, and I'm really glad that VH1 gave me some leverage to voice my opinions because we wanted to avoid clichés and not just have the obvious cast of characters. We've all seen a lot of tributes to soul over the years, and we all really wanted to do something special.

I am one voice of sixteen other people who have opinions, but my own main focus was to shine even a little light on the underdog. Of course, we wanted to honor the great ones, but it means a lot to me that we could spread some of our spotlight on the future great ones who are still making their good names like Ledisi and Marsha Ambrosius. Because I remember what it was like to be passed over on other shows when we were starting out for any bigger name. And as you'll see tonight, we have big names too on a bill that includes Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Kelly Clarkson, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson, Mavis Staples, Florence + The Machine, Boyz II Men, Jill Scott, Estelle, Wanda Jackson, Jessie J, Travie McCoy and Sharon Jones & her group The Dap Kings who back our Divas tribute to the late great and very soulful Amy Winehouse. But I also liked correcting the errors of twenty years ago, and giving some others their chance to show what they got, so you're gonna see all that and more. Because I am still that guy who asks: why doesn't radio play want I want to hear? Why doesn't TV show who I think is amazing? So I love taking any chance to help make that happen.

Of course, any sane person would have passed on this great opportunity with Divas because right in the middle of this whole operation, we had our new Roots album Undun coming out. Of course, I had our great gig as the house Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to deal with too -- not to mention that controversy I caused recently. So I was basically juggling six other plates in addition to the five plates I normally like to handle. But I felt it was absolutely imperative that I get involved with this Divas show to champion some talent and do what I could to help.

Was it easy? No, it was not. They don't call the show Divas for nothing. My pal Nelson George gave me the wisest advise. He said, "Ahmir, just take it one diva at a time." I told him that this show is the musical equivalent of that old Tom and Jerry cartoon where Jerry is in the kitchen slowly pushing the plates over the ledge, and Tom has to run back and forth to try and keep them all from breaking. Yes, it was a challenge. My unique job on this show was to be a wolf in sheep's clothes. I tried to walk a thin line -- keeping our Divas happy at the same time we were coloring between the lines that TV production will allow. There were some outlandish requests and difficult moments, but no blood was shed and a good and soulful time was had by us all.

Tune in tonight and see and hear for yourselves.
