Barbara Walters: 'You Can't Trust The Kardashians'

$

Barbara Walters put the Kardashians on her Most Fascinating People list, not her most reliable.

When the journalist appeared on "The Late Show" on Tuesday night, host David Letterman inquired quite heavily about the inclusion of the reality stars on the 2011 list, offering to remove them himself and asking about Kim's 72 day marriage.

"They were the first ones we interviewed and we did them in September," Walters explained. "We said, anything going to happen? 'No no no, you can do it now because nothing's going to happen.' Then Kim gets married. Then Kourtney gets pregnant. Then Khloe's moving to Dallas. You cannot trust the Kardashians."

Indeed, the sisters are always making headlines. You can't quite blame Khloe for the trip to Dallas -- that's coming thanks to her husband Lamar Odom's trade from the Lakers to the Mavericks -- but it would have been fantastic to see Walters question Kim about that short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries. The closest you'll get, at this point, is seeing Kris Humphries on "Good Morning America," which was awkward, to say the least.

Love It Or Leave It?

We love Selena Gomez on the red carpet: she tends to go for elegant gowns or whimsical yet sophisticated numbers like the ruffly Marchesa she wore at last month's EMAs.

But Selena on stage? We're not sure we're as stoked.

Last night the 19-year-old pop star performed at the Now 99.7 Triple Ho Concert 2.0 (yes, that's the real name) in San Jose in this red sequin and gilt onesie. We can't decide if we're loving the adventurousness of the look, or if it's a little costume-y.

Check out Selena's romper below and tell us: should she send this look packing?

Blasts Boob Job Rumors

Can't a girl show a little cleavage without having to respond to breast implant rumors the next day?

Not if you are Miley Cyrus. The 19-year-old singer and actress showed up to the CNN Heroes red carpet on Sunday night wearing a very low-cut yellow gown.

With her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth on her arm, Miley looked nothing less than gorgeous, but her cleavage baring moment sparked rumors she'd gone under the knife.

On Tuesday, Miley responded to rumors on Twitter:

Cyrus quickly responded again to the fan's twitter account decrying, "And I'm 19!!! BOOBS GROW PEOPLE!"

The rumors were started by RadarOnline, who wrote that Cyrus likely had implants based on the opinions of cosmetic surgeons who had never treated the singer.

Miley has been quite vocal on Twitter in the last few months, using the microblogging site to scold fans for rude messages sent to pal Kelly Osbourne, defend herself and Demi Lovato from those calling them fat, and she spoke out against clothing retailer Urban Outfitters for donating more than $13,000 to the former Pennsylvania senator -- and famously anti-gay -- Rick Santorum's political action committee.

Miley has definitely grown up:

Kardashians' Next Stop: Las Vegas

With new details further unraveling Kim Kardashian's 72-day marriage and news that Khloe will be moving to Dallas to be with her husband, Lamar Odom, you'd think that the family would take a few weeks off from work to enjoy the holiday. Well, think again. The gang's all here and they're headed to Vegas.

"The Kardashian family [will] gather to celebrate the grand opening of their brand new celebrity lifestyle boutique, Kardashian Khaos, inside the Mirage Hotel and Casino," a publicist for the brand told me. "Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kris Jenner, Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner will all attend."

On Thursday, the family will be working on the Strip selling exclusive items as well as special made-to-order Las Vegas souvenirs.

"They are even bringing brother Rob Kardashian and Kourtney's partner Scott Disick," an insider told me. "They are hoping that Lamar will attend, too, to show how united they are as a family, but will not know about this until the day before. This is a chance to show everyone that they are united as a family. They go through good times and bad times. But at the end of the day, family is what really counts."

It certainly wouldn't be the holidays if the Kardashians weren't promoting one of their many brands.

Obama's Favorite TV Shows

Even the President needs a little down time in front of the TV.

In a new interview with People Magazine, First Lady Michelle Obama gives a look into home life in the White House. As she reveals, when he's not making country-shaping decisions, her husband manages to squeak in some time for acclaimed cable dramas. And whether one agrees with his politics or not, he seems to have an eye for quality television: two of his favorite shows are Showtime's spy mind-trip "Homeland," starring Claire Daines, and "Boardwalk Empire," the Prohibition drama featuring Steve Buscemi.

As for family time at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the Obamas also enjoy Emmy-winning shows, including the ABC hit, "Modern Family." With its multi-cultural cast and emphasis on a new kind of loving, nuclear family for the 21st century, that should win points with the base, too.

Of course, Obama has to make sure to at least know a bit about some other shows, too; he made a fundraising trip out in Hollywood back in October, and with frequent gatherings such as the Kennedy Center Awards, he certainly rubs elbows with a whole lot of deep-pocketed stars.

Did Jennifer Lopez Buy Casper Smart A Bentley?

They say it's good to have friends in high places, but if Casper Smart has taught us anything, it's even better when you date them. The 24-year-old backup dancer who has been getting quite cozy with newly single Jennifer Lopez has a new ride to show off his lady in.

According to TMZ, the popstar has given her boy toy a Bentley to drive during their courtship. And it's apparently not just reserved for date night, "he gets the car for personal use, too."

The pair first began to heat up the rumor mill when they vacationed together in Hawaii over the Thanksgiving holiday and then again when photos surfaced of the pair engaging in some major PDA outside of a Los Angeles dance studio.

Lopez filed for divorce from husband of seven years, Marc Anthony, in July, but appears to be moving on quite seamlessly with the young and limber dancer.

Sacha Baron Cohen's Craziest Move Yet

Sacha Baron Cohen is a brave, brave man.

He's already goofed the world with his characters on "Da Ali G Show," and caused cultural ruckuses with "Borat" and "Bruno," so now he's taking the next logical step: wading into the most sensitive of international politics. And if one man can spoof the brutal regime of a dictator -- and somehow even make him likable -- it's got to be this lanky British mastermind.

Enter "The Dictator," Baron Cohen's latest film. He plays a North African dictator named General Aladeen, a combination of such deposed despots as Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi who gets sent to the United States, and from the look of this first trailer, relies less on a culture clash than exaggerating the awful things a power hungry, egomaniacal dictator might do to make sure he holds on tight to his rule. And, remarkably, it's hilarious.

Also featuring in the film are Megan Fox (who we see in the trailer) and Anna Faris, who plays a love interest that opens his eyes to new things -- like organic groceries.

WATCH: Colbert Honors The Memory Of Donald Trump Mattering

Once again, Donald Trump has dropped out of something before he was even in it. After the real estate mogul and television hair-sonality announced that he was bowing out of the GOP debate he had planned to moderate, Stephen Colbert took to his show to provide some perspective.

I would be lying if I didn't say I saw this coming. Donald Trump is a friend, he's my best friend... that said, the guy's a boob. He looks like a tangelo had sex with an old dishrag. And I can say that, because I love this man.

Of course, now that Trump's debate is off, it's more important than ever for America to get behind Colbert's "South Carolina Serious, Classy Republican Debate." The host delivered even more enticing details about the planned event, including a network change. Check out the full clip above.

Jessica Chastain's Painstaking, Unusual Method

Jessica Chastain has come into the cinema world like a house on fire in 2011, storming screens with five different -- and critically acclaimed -- films. But while it may seem like she's just appeared on the scene, the truth is that Chastain is a well-practiced and studied actress, a Juilliard graduate with a very dedicated approach to preparing for her roles.

In a new interview with Interview Magazine -- conducted by her "Take Shelter" co-star Michael Shannon -- Chastain explains how she prepped for her role as a 1950s housewife in "The Tree of Life." Casting her as a sort of grace incarnate, director Terrence Malick suggested she go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and take in a few paintings.

"There was one picture in particular: Raphael's Madonna. I would go into the Metropolitan Museum of Art and just sit for hours looking at the portraits of the Madonna, because I found that there's a completely different energy when you look at a painting of the Madonna and you look at a painting of any other woman, even from that time period," Chastain said. "There's something in her eyes and in her hands. There's never a direct gaze. Usually her eyes are kind of downcast, and her fingers seem like they're reaching up towards the heavens, even if they're at her heart. I found that was very helpful."

Whatever it was she saw, it worked: Chastain won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for the role, as well as critics awards from critics in LA and Toronto, amongst others. Of course, the star gives all credit to her director for the transposition from painting to film.

"Now when I watch the film, I see that in one of the very first shots of me, I'm sitting at the kitchen table and looking down to the right, and when I pause it, it looks like Raphael's Madonna. It's like, 'Terrence Malick! You knew!'" she said.

Chastain grows close to all of her roles, preparing in different ways; as she told The Huffington Post earlier this year, she spent time reading and looking at photographs of children in the holocaust for her role as a survivor and spy in "The Debt." When she leaves the characters, as she told HuffPost in an interview about "The Tree of Life," it's an emotional experience.

"I love every character I play, especially if I'm with them for a while, to me I don't see them as me, I see them as realized women, so when I leave them, I feel sad because I'm not going to meet that woman anymore," she confessed. "And I'm not a crazy, method person who always needs to be called by the character's name, but there's a feeling like I'm saying goodbye to someone I really really liked to get to know."

Chastain was nominated for Screen Actors' Guild Award on Wednesday for her role in "The Help."

Demi Moore: Twitter Name Change Not A Priority

Demi Moore may have split from husband Ashton Kutcher last month, but on Twitter she remains @MrsKutcher -- for now.

The actress, who announced her separation from Kutcher in November after six years of marriage, took to Twitter early Wednesday to address her handle.

The actress, who has over 4 million followers on the site, has been criticized for keeping her @MrsKutcher name post-separation, especially considering Kutcher allegedly cheated on Moore back in September.

"As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life," Moore told the AP when announcing the split.

Kutcher, who knows a thing or two about Twitter drama, used the social media site to send a message about Moore after news of their separation hit the media.

"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."

Sherri Shepherd's New Jersey 'Housewives' Twitter Feud?

"The View" co-host Sherri Shepherd and her husband Lamar "Sal" Sally were enjoying a party over the weekend in the Garden State until one of the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" brought along their infamous drama to the soiree. But before Shepherd could get all of the facts straight, she took to Twitter to condemn the wrong housewife.

"Why am I at a party in Jersey with Sal & one of the New Jersey Housewives gets into an altercation w someone! This is surreal & a #hotmess," she tweeted. But word must have gotten out that Shepherd was pointing fingers at Teresa Giudice because before long, Shepherd was issuing apologies: "Apology to @Teresa_Giudice ... thought you were at the party. I swear you got a doppleganger [sic]! Just as well - the drama didn't involve you!"

Although the "housewife" in question wasn't Giudice, it turns out she wasn't too far off -- it was Giudice's sister-in-law, Melissa Gorga.

"She was at a party I was at," Gorga explained to me. "I didn't even meet her. Someone tried to cause a fake fight to get attention because they are trying to be on the new 'Housewives.' Someone pretended that they overheard me and [fellow Real Housewife] Kathy talking about a girl in the bathroom that is trying to get on the next season. I knew it was B.S. because we didn't talk about anyone in the bathroom. So I called them out on it right away. The girl admitted it the next day. It was so stupid they were just trying to get attention."

Is this how you get on a reality show these days? Bravo, what have you created?

George Clooney Makes A Big Statement

Ever a crusader for civil rights, George Clooney has become the first star to join the Los Angeles production of Dustin Lance Black's play, "8."

The Oscar-winning actor will appear in the one night only event on March 3rd at LA's Wilshire Ebell Theatre, leading an as of yet unnamed cast of co-stars in a Rob Reiner-directed production. The play features the a reenactment of the courtroom drama behind the federal trial that overturned the Proposition 8 gay marriage ban in California.

"It is astonishing that gay and lesbian Americans are still treated as second-class citizens," Clooney said in a statement. "I am confident that, very soon, the laws of this nation will reflect the basic truth that gay and lesbian people -- like all human beings -- are born equal in dignity and rights."

Black, who won an Oscar for writing "Milk" and penned this year's "J. Edgar," produced a version of the play in New York City that starred Morgan Freeman, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow and 18 other stars. The drama centers on the defense of gay marriage pressed by former Solicitor General Theodore Olson and attorney David Boies, onetime political rivals who came together to fight the ban in federal court.

Featuring a cast in directors chairs and a barebones set, the play is more of a script reading, a representation of a trial that did not have its transcripts made public at first by the federal court.

Clooney has won a multitude of awards already this year for his role in this fall's dramedy, "The Descendants," in which he plays a beleaguered dad and husband struggling with new responsibilities. He also directed and starred in the political thriller, "The Ides of March."

Which TV Land Star Admits To Making Sex Tape?

Paris Hilton has one and so does Kim Kardashian. So why shouldn't the star of TV Land's new sitcom "The Exes," David Alan Basche, have one too?

"I've seen a couple of these tapes -- Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian," David confessed. "I don't know what they were on or what. Horrible! If you are going to do it, do it with Tommy Lee or someone like that ... come on!"

Regarding his own marriage, Basche revealed, "You don't stay happily married for 14 years without a little somethin'-somethin,' you know? Flip cam."

Thrilled that his show airs right after Betty White and the ladies of "Hot in Cleveland," David admitted, "If there's one woman you want to be behind, it's Betty White!" And along with his castmates -- Donald Frazen from "Scrubs," Wayne Knight from "Seinfeld," and Kristen Johnston from "3rd Rock from the Sun" -- David has fallen in love with fellow network star, Betty White. And how could he resist?

"I think it's a combo. I think [Betty] is naughty and nice because she's a sweet old lady and then all of a sudden, she's got this trash mouth of garbage! And she's sharp as a tack," David told me on the set of my HDNet talk show "Naughty But Nice with Rob." "[Betty's co-stars] are very protective of her. I saw Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick and Valerie Bertinelli walking her around [a] party introducing her to people, saving her from those awkward conversations."

Let's hope David can capture all that on his flip cam too!

Robert Downey Jr. Disappointed The 'Sherlock Holmes' Expert On His New Movie

Robert Downey Jr. stopped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (Weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC) last night to talk about his new film,"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

He acknowledged the problems inherent in portraying such a beloved figure and said that during shooting he'd run foul of the leading Sherlock Holmes expert, who was advising on accuracy.

Seeing that the guy was very upset about something, Downey asked what he had done wrong.

Turns out that whilst in character as Holmes, Downey called Watson (Jude Law) "John," which is a huge no-no. The disappointed expert told Downey that Holmes would never call his trusty sidekick by his first name: "Only call him 'Watson' or 'Mr. Watson.'"

Friends, Fans Mourn The Death Of Christopher Hitchens

Note from the Editor: Journalist and polemicist Christopher Hitchens died on Dec. 15 of pneumonia, a complication of esophageal cancer. He was 62. The following are quotes of remembrance from his friends and fans.

"Christopher was the beau ideal of the public intellectual. You felt as though he was writing to you and to you alone. And as a result many readers felt they knew him. Walking with him down the street in New York or through an airplane terminal was like escorting a movie star through the throngs." --Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter

"Over the course of his heroic, uncomplaining 18-month battle with the cancer, I found myself rehearsing what I might say to an obituary writer, should one ring after the news of Christopher's death. I thought to say something along the lines -- the air of Byron, the steel pen of Orwell, and the wit of Wilde." --Satirist Christopher Buckley

"Editing Christopher Hitchens, who died Thursday at the age of 62, was the easiest job in journalism. He never filed late -- in fact, he was usually early, even when he was clearly very sick -- and he managed to make his work seem like a great lark. His weekly e-mails always read the same jaunty way: 'Herewith. Hope it serves, As always, Christopher.'" --Slate editor June Thomas

"Like all of us, he was often wrong, but never in the way everyone else was wrong. His originality was a constant, his independence an unstoppable engine. He loved to argue and debate, not because he was a bully but because he thought it pointed in the direction of truth. And possibly because he was better at it than anyone else." --Journalist Jacob Weisberg

"Few have written so movingly, so bravely and with such self-awareness about coming to terms with impending death. The announcement of a 'Pray for Christopher Hitchens Day' must have caused him more than a wry smile. 'Don't bother unless it makes you feel better,' he said. There could be few less likely deathbed conversions." --Patrick Gallagher, Hitchens' Australian publisher

"We shall miss you, your voice, your pen, & most of all your mind Christopher. The world is better because of you." --Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic magazine

"Goodbye, my beloved friend. A great voice falls silent. A great heart stops. " --Author Salman Rushdie

"Christopher Hitchens, finest orator of our time, fellow horseman, valiant fighter against all tyrants including God." --Author Richard Dawkins

Perry: I'm The Tim Tebow Of The Race

Rick Perry isn't leading in the polls, but that didn't stop him from comparing himself to one of the NFL's most exciting young players at the 'Republican Presidential Debate' (Thu., 9 p.m. ET on Fox News). Saying that he was beginning to enjoy the GOP's frequent debates, Perry addressed those who don't think he's equipped for the job of U.S. president.

"There are a lot of folks who said Tim Tebow wasn't going to be a very good NFL quarterback. There are people who stood up and said, 'Well, he doesn't have the right throwing mechanisms,'" Perry said. "He won two national championships and that looked pretty good. We were the national champions in job creation back in Texas."

He then told the crowd: "I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa caucuses!" While the country and his own staff remain divided over his anti-gay "Strong" ad that's running in Iowa, it remains to be seen how the state will respond to it at the polls. The Iowa caucus will be the first of the election season, on Jan. 3, 2012.

J.R. Martinez Dances With Katie Couric

"J.R. Martinez became a hero on the battlefield when the Humvee he was driving hit a landmine," Katie Couric said on "The Year With Katie Couric" (Thu., 9PM ET on ABC). His was the story that would touch the nation, as he triumphed over his injuries and never seemed to lose that smile. But it was with his performances on "Dancing With the Stars" that he captivated a whole new legion of fans, scoring the first perfect 10s of the season.

"Who would have thought dancing would actually change your life?" Martinez said. "Dancing is a beautiful thing." And with that, he declared that he was done talking.

So he and Couric took to the dance floor and spent the rest of their time moving gracefully across it. Couric proved a more than capable partner for the "DWTS" champion. Maybe she should consider giving the show a try should her busy schedule ever free up.

Since taking the mirrorball trophy, Martinez has been invited to the Pentagon, and continues his tireless work to help wounded veterans and burn victims across the nation. He is an inspiration both on the dance floor and in life.

Christian Bale Tangles With Chinese Police, Joins Political Firestorm

Christian Bale scuffled with guards on Thursday as he was denied a chance to meet Chen Guangcheng, a blind Chinese lawyer and civil rights activist who has been under house arrest in China for over a year.

Bale, who will star in the upcoming Chinese film, "The Flowers of War," went on an eight hour drive with a CNN crew to visit Chen in the city of Linyi, where he's been held in his own home since September 2010. When Bale approached Chen's house, he was met by an escalating number of guards as he protested his inability to enter Chen's house. Punches were thrown and shoving ensued as he, along with the CNN camera crew, tried to push his way through to the house.

Chen, a women's rights activist, was originally arrested in 2006 and sentenced to four years in prison for "damaging property and organizing a mob to disturb traffic." Video of authorities beating him in his own home leaked to the web in 2010, causing outraged responses from civil rights groups.

"I'm not being brave doing this. The local people who are standing up to the authorities and insisting on going to visit Chen and his family and getting beaten up for it and my understanding is getting detained for it, I want to support what they're doing," Bale told the CNN crew.

In October, film studio Relativity Media came under fire for planning a film shoot in Linyi, a city in Shandong province.

The Chinese government partially funded the production of "The Flowers of War," in which Bale stars as an American who finds himself in the middle of the infamous Rape of Nanking, a mass murder and rape spree carried out by Japanese soldiers in 1937. The Zhang Yimou-directed film hits theaters in America in limited release in late December in a qualifying run for the Oscars, for which it is China's official entry into the Best Foreign Language Film category. Bale has been in China to promote the film, though he has since left.

For more, click over to CNN.

UPDATE (9:58 PM EST): "He's been following the story and he was just really moved by the story and what this man's trying to do and it's impossible [to see him]," Bale's representative told The Huffington Post, "and he thought, he was there for work, and he would try and see if he could help. [It was] just really being moved on a personal level and that is what he chose to do."

Christopher Hitchens was a journalist, an author, an atheist, a smoker, a drinker, a provocateur, a husband and a father. His death on Dec. 15 at the age of 62 was a surprise to many of his friends and fans, even though they knew he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2010.
